BOTM Feb 2015 Ballad of the Month "Moonlight in Vermont"

Nice vintage feel Peter - done in your new recording space ?

What ?? like one less note ?? 😀

Thanks Brendan. Indeed recorded in the new space, a room under de factory of a friend. This room has a bit more natural reverb then the previous room I used, which has three glass walls. But the Plasticover reeds I use since a few month also make my sound a bit darker, more vintage (when played with a lower airstream!).

I also still use way too much notes in ballads (actually in all numbers!). Still didn't figure out how ballad masters as Ben Webster always managed to kick out perfect takes.

Hey,
taking the risk of being completely offtopic:
I got 2 new LRM2 ribbon mics (successor of the LRM1 sold by JP Gerard from Belgium), one with stock transformer and one with Lundahl transformer (which is the more "honest" one).

I recorded the tune with my Alto (iPad, Auria, Apogee One), LRM2 Lundahl.
I am sorry it's not a ballad.
At least it is Moonlight in Vermont 🙂

To play stuff that makes sense at this tempo, you should have practiced ultra-slow....

But anyway, it is about testing mics, hehe...
So, here it is, I hope you like it:

I'm more and more convinced when listening to some of the pro versions from you tube that the greats aren't playing it how it's written in our given sheet. Reading from the Eb version, the E in bar 4 is often being played as an Eb and adds a certain something. The Bb9#11 has the #11 to accommodate the E. Bb11 would give us an Eb. It alters the flavour. What do you think?

Tenor sat there doing nothing. Can't have that. Practiced playing quiet. I thought I'd have another go seeing as I can't seem to get it out of my head. Trying for light and shade and a slow swing.

After listening, I felt that you rated more than a click on an icon. Very, very nice cover, Colin. I've pulled the plug on the headphones here at the kitchen table (11:15 AM here and I'm not long up - on my second cup of coffee) so that my wife can have a listen.
