Getting back to playing tenor and enjoying it a whole lot. I wanna shop around for an alto starting the beginning of next year but I literally have not played an alto since 1980. My ultimate goal is to get a pretty good one but I’m wondering if maybe I should start with an intermediate level used horn just to get the idea of playing it back again so that then I can trust my personal opinions on trying possible more expensive horns. Any suggestions on what type of horn to shoot for? I’m thinking sub $2000.

OK so you are in US ?

And you are open to used or new ?

And you used to play 40 years ago ?

Do you remember what model sax you played then ?

$2g is a good budget for a used professional Alto, modern or vintage, quite honestly...if you wanna just shoot for that now. You could get a used student model in play shape for around $500-600, vintage or contemporary.

You could also buy a brand new, brand-name, reputed student model for $2g or maybe even a tad less.

So....you have a lotta options. Kinda hard for us to answer your Q with really focused replies , so if you could include some of above that'd help.

Love the idea of a TH&C. Looks like $2000+ for ready to play.
I think you gotta approach this with a thought-out modus operandi.

You are in US, you can go up to $2g

But you are basically a re-beginner...so do you HAVE to spend $2g ?

Or is it better to re-acquaint yourself with sax on a more basic model, then if you 'take to it', after a few years under your belt and your fingers, start honing in on the tangible aspects (or intangible) which move you (tonality, blowing response, etc) ?

IOW, wouldn't a $650 used alto provide you with all you 'need' to re-start ?

Then ask, what would another $200 of investment get me beyond the $650 choices ?

Etc.

So, yes, you CAN afford a THC...or a Conn 6M Lady...probably a late King S20.....a Yanagisawa.....a Martin Committee....a Yamaha 62.....an Eastman....a whole bunch of established pro models.

Likely none of them would be a "oh, man I shouldn't have done that !" purchase.

All would have some serious Street Cred. You won't get beat up in the sax playground sporting one of those for sure....

Some will likely suit better than others.

Do you wanna spend all that budget ?

Alternate game plan:

A good, established base model which could be as simple as even a Conn Shooting Star or Bundy, both available for $500 in great shape...or for another $150 go to a Yamaha 23, the ubiquitous default suggestion for a student horn.... any of which would be good choices which you can get a good 2-5 years out of before deciding to upgrade.

Or for another $50 move into an intermediate model from the get go with one of Yama's competitors, a Jupiter or Buffet.

Stop at $500.

Or stop at $700.

Some would argue given your context, the $500 or $700 horn will give you all you need or even want to get you to the point of "I am digging this, gonna get more serious".

If you insist, chuck another $500 at it and go with a pro model Jupiter, a Yamaha intermediate model like a 475 or 52. For that you could even get a late model 6M or a sweet-spot Buescher Aristocrat or King Zephyr...if vintage floats your boat more than modern.

So there are a lot of pause points for consideration.

You’d rather fight than switch!
Actually I'd be lying if I swore to that. I said that facetiously to lighten things and add a little humour. 😉

I also have my Taiwanese 1980's Antigua Winds alto (plays as well as my 1971 Yamaha YAS-61) just back from the shop and my 1952 Beaugnier Vito 37 alto now in the shop. 😎

But I still love my Bundy, it's a good busking sax. :w00t:

Some of which depends on what you (the OP) mean by budget. Some folks run a tight ship and $€£2,000 means: that's all I'm spending on this for a year or so. Others mean: that's what I'll spend on the horn. I've scanned the price range a feel like I'm inclined to that part of the market; and I'll find above-and-beyond expenses elsewhere.

It matters because there are other expenses, essentials, consumables, nice to haves. Reeds, possibly a mouthpiece, maybe books, music stand, swabs, a handy recorder, lessons...

Not sure of exactly what your sub $2K is, but I'd spend it, and get a second hand horn, in excellent playing condition, from a reputable tech/store.
An honest Sax playing Tech, might be the best horn for a fair price, and helpful if you feel the need to upgrade.
