Beginners' Diary - Chris

Hi Chris, Jane and I found the two hardest things about playing with others more formally, are confidence and counting. They both come and go but sure seems to take a while to get them to stay. Keep at it, reads like you're doing really well.

Playing with others is a fantastic way to improve your skills.
After all everyone who plays music wants to play with others at another point.

I was very lucky and started playing with others from a young age in county music groups. They were possibly the best thing for my musical education.

As well as being with other people with the same aspirations, and goals I was with a variety of instruments, had a great resource in the tutors and other members but the most overlooked fact tends to be that when you play with people better than you it appears to me that you improve much quicker and in an all round manner too.

Bottom line: Competition is great! But it's also hugely enjoyable. Do it!

EDIT: I also got to play a baritone sax for a year, which I would never of had the opportunity to do otherwise.

A full piano isn't strictly necessary. A cheap keyboard of the Casio variety still makes an excellent learning tool.

Hi Mike,

All the best,

Chris

Perhaps not, but you still have the scales and chords displayed for you without needing to make a huge investment. If you want a good piano sound it's probably cheaper to buy a "dumb" USB keyboard and a software piano.

Sounds like you're still having loads of fun, and you've just embarked upon a new challenge of the tenor! What tenor did you buy?

Congratulations upon the first gig, it's always a mightily daunting experience.

Hi Chris
I was at sax pak last couple of weeks, and also the swing band.
Great to play in a band at last, despite the bum notes.
No band next Tues, but sax pak is on, see you there.
By the way, I saw them playing in town before Christmas, and it wasn't at all bad. Hopefully i'll be with them next Christmas.

Hi Linky,

Take care,

Hi, thanks.
University is treating me very well at the moment. Just sitting my first lot of exams for my new course, so very apprehensive to see how I do.

You're right though, I don't post on here that much anymore, but I do come on and have a look around. Especially this thread, it's always a good read.

Keep up the thread when you can, I think it's a very very useful read for beginners and teachers.

Best of luck with the grade 5! I found it was around this level when I really started to enjoy music and really devote my time to it. The music got to the point where it was musically satisfying and inspiring.

Hi Chris

Is that a YTS62 or the 275?

Good luck with grade 5. Don't forget you need the grade 5 theory b4 you do your grade 6. My tutor omitted to tell me that (!). Have just put in for it, exam is March 5th. Had my first lesson yesterday so have a lot to learn quickly. Don't get caught out like me if you are doing the 'classical' exams.

Cheers

Hi Simon,

All the best,

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
