Baritone Sax - Student Models

Thank you very much. I also just heard form a gentleman in Norway, who has had a Yanagisawa B 901 for five years. He says that he is very happy with it and has purchased a silver neck for it and finds that even more enjoyable.

I expect I will end up getting the B 901 too.

I tend to find my expectations get broken.

I went to play a P.Mauriat Tenor after hearing generally positive responses and thinking it sounds like quite a nice match for my style.
I played three and they were all horrible, they didn't even feel comfortable to me.
I've had it the other way around too though!

Point is, you won't know until you play them.

as far as baritones go i feel there is no such thing as a student model if your really just talking about price..there are just good ones and bad ones.. you got to go out there and try some out. its the only way, and if your not that interested and just want a bari consider these points..
1. its big, you need a space to keep it..don't expect the wife to move it..
2. if you have any back problems its no worth the pain for an indulgence
4. measure the boot of your car,keep the measurments in your wallet.. i have to measure boots when i buy a car.

bari is a serious hunk of metal it gets in the way . its hard to carry upstairs, it hurts your back if you don't stand properly, you can ruin a perfectly good shirt via the spit valve..

on the other hand its one of the best bits of fun you can have with your cloths on, don't play naked the tone holes can't half pinch

Here here to that, when I first got a tenor I thought it was kewl and sexy, nothing could change my mind on that, until that is the baritone arrived. It simply kicks ass, I don't even think a bass sax would be better, the baritone has got it all. I'm a bit bias though!

Hey all together!!
I also play the baritone sax for a few months...I use a Yamaha student at the moment - but I want to buy a new one.

i dont know it - does anybody out there can tell me sth about these saxophone manufactures??? Where do they produce the baris? Are they comareable with Yamaha, Yanagisawa or Selmer?
Do these baris sound good and full or are they different in any other way??

i urgently need help!!

where are you in Germany?
the Jupi 593 is very good value - the Redwood 'sounds' like it's a taiwan horn, where have you seen it?, and the Thomanns, I haven't found anyone yet who's played one. And that is really the secret to buying a horn, try them all out.

Thomann seems to be reputable company, I haven't tried one, but I'd trust it a bit more than an unknown brand. They do a money back trial period I think?

An update . . .

I just purchased a Yanagisawa B-901 from Trevor Jones Brass & Woodwind Ltd, Bristol at a very competetive price (the best that I could get). It should arrive on Wednesday or Thursday.

Congratulations, I'm sure you'll both be very happy together. Now all you need is a rip-snorting mouthpiece to really make it rock!

Actually, Yani mouthpieces are really pretty good.

I had a look at Trevor Jones' prices, and they're pretty good, especially for a 'proper' shop rather than an internet dealer.

I had heard that the Yanagisawa mouthpieces were all right. Once I have got used to playing the Yani I will probably upgrade the mouthpiece to a more open lay but I am in no hurry. Trevor Jones was most helpful when I telephoned him on Saturday and it is good to deal with a proper music shop as you say.

My B-901 arrived today and I love it (her?) already. Very well set-up and so easy to get that low A. Regarding the weight, I am actually surprised how beautifully balanced it (she) feels when around my neck. So far I have only used the supplied neck strap but I have purchased a BG Harness which I am about to try. I do have a back problem so that may make things even easier.

I know that I am going to spend many happy hours getting to know my new indulgence.

Anyway, thank you all for the good advice and recommendations.
