Although the term Free Speech (in its accepted sense as a political or religious concept) doesn't apply to online forums, we respect a right to Freedom of Expression in that we think everyone is entitled to politely and reasonably to express an opinion and we respect their right to it, and expect other members to do the same, even if we disagree with it.
We don't moderate arbitrarily and delete something just because we disagree or don't like it. As far as possible we go by the rules below. There are sometimes grey areas and sometimes we may get it wrong. If so you are welcome to question policies in general on the What's Wrong with the Cafe Thread, but for specific moderator actions regarding your self please use the private Contact Mods forum.
General Rules
You may not use Cafesaxophone for illegal activities
(as defined under any state, national or international laws), whether it is directly illegal, or promotion of, or supporting, condoning, or encouraging illegal activities. Although we immediately remove any illegal content from public view, it may be retained on the database and made available to law enforcement agencies as direct evidence of illegal action.

Any objections to other members' forum behaviour or allegations of rule breaking should be made in confidence to moderators via the report button, not call them out or make personal attacks publically on the forums.
Certain offensive words are automatically replaced with asterisks. Do not try to get around this by deliberately mis-spelling, using spaces, abbreviations or special characters.
Do not post the same thread multiple times.
The following are against our rules and may be removed or edited by admin:
one-word or short meaningless posts, redundant posts such as “PM sent”
email addresses, phone numbers (whether it is your own or anyone else’s), the contents of private correspondence without permission (Emails, DMs etc.) or any other member's private information or personal information that you do not have permissions to share.
ALL CAPITALS, emojis, or special characters (e.g. asterisks, chevrons etc.), in thread titles or usernames to draw attention to your posts.
Direct messages older than 3 years are automatically deleted. You may export DMs at any time.

All members must have a valid email account logged with the forum.
You may not edit your posts in such a way as to make other posts appear nonsensical, e.g once your post has been replied to. It is especially bad to delete the first post of a thread
If you quote other members, you must not edit the text of what they said or remove any relevant context without which their meaning may be misconstrued. If you have
If you post links to audio/video or files hosted on another site and subsequently remove the file/s, you must inform us so we can remove the dead link and/or replies as these will no longer be relevant once your link is dead. This is especially important when you have asked for a critique of your playing and other members have helped with advice. Repeatedly doing so will lead to removal of posting privileges or a suspension.
If you are contacted by a moderator in regard to any perceived breach of rules or use of the forum, you must respond before making any further posts.
The post report function is there to report posts that you believe infringe the rules. Frivolous reports waste moderator’s time so please include the specific rule that has been broken. Alternatively you may report your own post if you need it edited.
Politics & Religion.
No political canvassing, discussions, or political references in avatars, signatures or profile info. This may include (but not limited to) anything which appears to be encouraging such posts or topics. This includes anything that may have recently become "political" due to controversial political debate and/or legislation. Note that not everything is considered political in all territories but may be included due to the international nature of the forum.
Not OK for discussion:
Gun control legislation
Hunting
Climate change denial
Holocaust denial
(Anti) vaxxing
COVID mask mandates and unproven remedies
Economic or environmental policies pertaining to specific political figures, parties or administrations.
Links to articles that would obviously result in political debate, especially with controversial headlines
OK:
Discussion of economics in general but especially in regard to Cafe topics, e.g. tariffs on instruments and accessories.
Discussion of historical events that may have been political at the time but no longer are inflammatory. e.g. slavery (unless condoning it!)
Factual references to historical political figures that do not contravene the above
Quotes by historical political figures that are not political. e.g. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few - Winston Churchill (in regard to Cafesaxophone moderators 🙂 )
No religious discussions, or references in avatars, or profile info.
We especially discourage any discussions that attempt to convert, claim superiority of one religion over another, or claim that any anyone's chosen religion is wrong. These discussions inevitably end up in a bad way. Short quotes from religious texts in signatures may be OK but you must first discuss with admin.
Artificial Intelligence and bots.
Summary of our AI policy
While we do not prohibit AI content on the forum it is strongly discouraged when used in place of human generated content. Anyone can now easily get answers from Gemini, ChatGPT etc but this forum about real human experience and opinions, human answers and human discourse. Our members visit in order to get and give advice based on human experience and want to know it is a person that they are talking to.
We do not allow members who are bots, or who use wholly bot generated content.
Using some AI to partially help write (e.g. translation) is permitted, but blatantly robot posts may be removed by staff.
Full disclosure
AI or bot generated text and/or images in posts that is used as an example is allowed, but all ai content must be declared as such and included in ai quote tags (see text editor insert dropdown).
Answering someone's question by getting an AI response and posting it as an answer. Again, we believe people want to hear other peoples' actual experience and learned knowledge.
Posting an AI generated article, or substantial part thereof.
Notwithstanding the above, like many websites and forums with user generated content, we may make use of AI moderation resources via Sightengine NSFW content detection. This is used to aid compliance with child protection legislation. It is used purely to scan for potentially harmful images and grants no rights over your content to Sightengine beyond their specific service provision as outlined in their privacy policy.
We do not sell your content for AI training and as far as possible we try to stop content from being scraped for AI training. We use Cloudflare to block bots apart from those required for search engine listing.

Guidelines & Etiquette
Please post an introduction when you join the forum.
Above all please be polite. It’s fine to disagree and to point out when you think somebody is wrong, but please do so with respect and not in a rude, snide, snarky, aggressive, accusatory, or confrontational manner.
If you want to delete or edit your posts after the initial time to do so has lapsed, then you can do this by contacting an admin. The same applies to discussion of moderator action such as post/thread deletions, disciplinary decisions, account suspensions etc.
If possible posts should be written in the English language (which may include native dialects such as UK, US, Australian etc). You may post in other languages providing you also include an English translation.
Please take some time to see if a question you have has already been asked and has an answer that is still relevant. If you have something new to add to that discussion please do so in the thread rather than starting a whole new thread on the same thing.
Please use thread titles that are descriptive of the topic, this helps with searches and the likelihood of getting the best responses. No emojis in thread titles, it just looks a mess in the thread list. Please don’t be offended if we edit thread titles that do not comply, or move off topic content.
We politely ask members to follow normal online etiquette re: using all caps or large text. Also note that using coloured text is likely to be illegible for members using the forum in a different light/dark mode.
If you want to leave our community, please do not make a big deal out of it and post publically about it (aka YAGE - Yet Another Grand Exit).
Note that this term includes both official and "unofficial" endorsers. If you were given a free item or discounted item outside of a regular sale, then you need to disclose that when discussing/reviewing that product or posting videos.
Affiliate brands
Cafesaxophone relies on affiliate income (commission on sales) from certain brands. From time to time we may promote these via discount coupons. You may not advise, promote, encourage or link to any affiliate schemes/coupons for the same brand as a Cafesaxophone affiliate.
Commercial Vendors
This includes manufacturers, retailers, schools/colleges and event promters.
No commercial posting is allowed on the general forum pages, however businesses may post in the commercial announcements section. Please contact us for further info about advertising. Notwithstanding, you may reply to direct questions in the forums that related to your product provided your replies are factual and not promotional in any way.
You may still offer any personal single used items in the “Yard Sale” section (see below), provided the sales are connected directly to your business.
You may not promote any product or service in which you have an interest without first discussing with admin. e.g. masquerading as a “happy customer” (shill). This also applies to promoting of, or soliciting registration at, a competing forum without first discussing with admin.
All vendors must include a public customer support physical address, telephone number, or link to email contact form.
Manufacturers’ Product Announcements should be made in the appropriate forum and should be original content, not copied and pasted ads.
Links: You can link to your own (non-commercial) website, social media etc. in your profile, signature or posts, but we appreciate appropriate link from that site to cafesaxophone.com. Any such links must be on a home page or page directly linked in your main navigation. Links to commercial must be with admin permission and must reciprocate as advised by admin.
Your username cannot be a website URL or an email address
Do not solicit members via Direct Message for business purposes, unless they have expressed an interest specifically via the forum. Anyone receiving such solicitations should report to admin.
Yardsale (Classifieds)
The Yardsale subforum is for selling of personal items only. Commercial vendors must use the appropriate forum.
The buyer pays the seller directly. The seller pays a 5% (or optionally more) contribution to the fundraising* based on the advertised value or the value of any offer accepted (voluntary maximum £150/$200). For trades or part exchanges the amount is based on the estimated monetary value.
* For wanted ads, the purchaser pays the contribution.
Fees are payable only when a transaction is successful.
To qualify for posting for sale ads members must either
have at least 40 posts and been a member for at least one month.
or upgrade their account with an annual subscription. This is for access without needing the 40 posts. The contribution after a successful sale still applies.
or pay the 5% contribution on the initial listing price in advance.
No soliciting of sales/trades or advertising outside the Yardsale (e.g. on other forums in the Café, via DM or signature). You may link to a Yardsale ad in from another thread provided it is in answer to a relevant question.
Please don't ask buyers to use the Paypal Personal (Friends & Family) option for transactions. Apart from contravening Paypal policy and being possibly fraudulent, the normal Paypal protection is not included. Always take any fees into account with the price.
For all sales completed we ask for a contribution to our Cafesaxophone fundraising. We suggest minimum 5%, but you are free of course to donate more if you wish. Please use the YARDSALE button at the bottom of the page
Sales transactions and shipping arrangements should be via DM not in the thread
Payments should be made within one week of buyer confirming safe receipt of item. Please advise Jeanette if this will not be possible. Failure to pay in a timely manner may result in exclusion from the yard sale and other listings being removed.
Public discussion/debate regarding the asking price or accuracy of description is not allowed. Report the post if you think it is inaccurate or discuss with the seller privately.
No Off Topic posts unless the seller specifically allows this.
No links to items you have for sale outside the Cafe (e.g. eBay, Reverb) etc.
No product announcements, event promotion or business advertising. The Yardsale is for one-off private sales of used items, not for advertising a product range.
Sellers must provide an accurate detailed description of any items offered for sale or exchange.
No counterfeit or stolen items.
No sales of any software, media files, e-books etc. unless the licence or T&C attached to them explicitly allows this.
No gratuitous bumping of your posts within any two week period (e.g. "still for sale," "sale pending"). Posting to mention price reductions > 2% are fine.
When an item is sold, you should mark it as sold by editing the thread and changing the title prefix.
All sales are conducted between the seller & buyer at their own risk. No warranty, liability or responsibility is accepted by CafeSaxophone for transactions conducted. Any problems/disputes are the sole responsibility of the buyer/seller concerned.
If trading internationally the buyer is responsible for any duty/VAT/tariffs.
You may only offer for sale or exchange goods which you own, or have the owner’s permission to trade on their behalf. If you are selling on behalf of someone else you must disclose this in the ad.
Auctions are occasionally allowed for lots of several items when 100% is a paid to Cafe, but please ask first.
Any breaking of these rules could lead to automatically being suspended or banned from the forum with no warning.
Although the administrators and moderators of Cafe Saxophone Discussion will attempt to keep all objectionable messages off this forum, it is impossible for us to review all messages. I'm completely new to the world of making music—I've never played a saxophone or any other instrument before! However, I've always loved the sound of the Tenor Saxophone.
I definitely lean toward the darker tones you hear in Soul and R&B, rather than the brighter, lighter sounds.
Right now, I'm trying to choose my first horn and I'm drawn between two options:
Yamaha YTS-280: This seems to be the gold standard for beginners. It gets excellent reviews everywhere, comes with a great warranty, and has a really solid repair network.
Trevor James EVO: This one is catching my ear because it's described as having that darker sound I’m naturally drawn to. However, it doesn't seem to have as many reviews, the warranty is weaker, and the repair network seems a bit more complicated here in the UK.
I'd love to hear of any experiences of these two horns. Specifically, I'm wondering whether the EVO would be a suitable student horn, and whether the EVO would benefit from adding a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece right out of the box.
You may have noticed a tickbox to accept our updated rules.
Please feel free to make comments here on the changes (or existing rules). A lot of time and thought went into these rules whose enytire aim is to make the Cafe a more pleasant place for all.
not the best recording, played the head a bit messily, the reason the video is black is because i had my phone lying on the desk with the camera pointing down into the desk
been trying to work on my sound to get it to be large and warm
any tips or constructive feedback would be appreciated
Inspired by @Tenor Viols musings, I decided to create my own thread. Focused on my new 'journey' from Big Band music into the world of rock/pop music.. Not only the very different style of music but (for me) also the very different world of amplification, different mpc's, etc,
I
For the 1st 3 weeks, things started off really well! I was enthusiastic and so were the band. I was less enthusiastic on the 4th week when the nominal 'band leader' returned from a vacation, brought a ton of equipment along with him and basically drowned other members out.
During the 4th rehearsal (always on a Saturday), I noticed that my right hand felt a bit 'odd' but OK. That night, the pain in my right hand kept me awake. The day after (following internet advice) , I applied a bandage and ice. My guess is that I injured my hand during a "Fitness Session' the previous Friday. Since then , I haven't been able to play sax🙁. But I have been able to listen to some tracks that I've been asked to play🙂. Not exactly (no-one in the band does) but 'sufficiently recognisable'.
Everybody knows the nice horns that get talked about all the time (Selmer, Martin, Yamaha, etc). Then there are the good instruments less talked about but I would say still fairly well known (a Yamaha Vito stencil for example).
How about a topic for those worthy saxophones (I'll leave the definition of worthy alone for now) that are rarely discussed?
Obviously beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I have to say that is a very cool looking alto! With an interesting story as well, that you can find if you dig a bit here or at the other forum.
I have a newish Trevor James The Horn soprano that I bought from a friend to try out.
I really like soprano, and now I am wondering, well, "GAS" is wondering whether I could get a better soprano. I have been specifically looking at the YSS 475, because it is in my price range and because I have heard good things about it.
It would always be my second instrument, my first being alto (Yamaha 62). I might be going to (a well known sax shop in South London) this week to try some out and I hope I have the willpower to remain objective in the face of so much temptation. I have considered second hand but sopranos are so finnicky I think I would prefer to buy new or second hand refurbished from a shop.
But before I go was just wondering whether anyone on here has tried both saxes and noticed any real difference in how they both sound/feel etc?
Not expecting much. Most of the "real shell" pearls I've looked at seem to be covered in acrylic which means they're no different than a plastic key surely?
Anyway... for a fiver it's worth a go. Let you know what they're like once they arrive.
my jaw is slightly recessed, not too bad but it is not even with my upper lip
i can still get an alright sound but should i be purposefully putting my lower lip foward in order to compensate for this?
i find forcing the lower lip further foward does make the reed feel like its more free, and easier to get altissimo notes. but long term it feels a bit uncomfortable and unnatural so i find myself subconsciously putting my lower lip further back over time
is subtone supposed to be achieved by moving the bottom lip lower on the reed to dampen the sound? or is it achieved by just lowering/widening the airstream and keeping the embrochure the same?
found you can achieve a subtone by doing both but am not sure if one or the other is better, or if they can both be done interchangably. also i find doing the former (dampening the reed by moving the bottom of the lip lower on the reed) makes the sound slightly more thin and muffled than doing the latter variation of subtone.
I'm thinking of acquiring a secondhand Suzuki Van Van and learning to ride over the summer, the idea being that it will be fun, and more economical than my 4x4 for going to work and other short journeys, when the weather is reasonable. But on quite a few of those journeys I am accompanied by my tenor.
Anyone carry one on a bike, and got any advice please?
My question is whether I should give my Tenor Sax a complete overhaul (very probably!) and if so, whether I should look for a sax repairer who has specific knowledge, skills and reputation of overhauling 'vintage saxophones'.
TBH, I've asked questions on this topic to 'Google AI' and I've got some valuable responses. For example, the difference between 'regular sax maintenance' and 'complete overhauls'. Down to which local 'repairers' would be best qualified to overhaul my specific sax and the questions that I should ask them beforehand! All based on my specific Tenor sax model and year. Another 'Google AI' conclusion was that - on average - periodic 'minor sax maintenance' should be done every 1-2 years. And a 'major overhaul' might be needed every 5-10 years. My sax has had neither in 20 years!
So what I would like from experienced. informed and human sax repairers are their opinions on the answers that I got from Google AI based on the 'background 'below.
Background
I bought my 1961 'Buffet Crampon Super Dynaction' Tenor Sax about 20 years ago. At that time, it had been thoroughly 'checked out' and played easily in comparison to other 'vintage saxes' that I tried out. In the 20 years since, I've had a few minor 'playing problems' quickly inspected and fixed' by my local 'clarinet/sax' lady. Usually free of charge. But in these 20 years, my sax has never had 'periodic maintenance' or 'overhauls'
Lately (for the past 6 months or more), I've been really struggling to play my sax. With certain notes (G/G# in the higher octave) 'squeaking'. In my local sax lady's opinion (within 5 minutes) she said that the 2 octave keys worked fine mechanically. So that any 'squeaks' were probably due to my 'embouchure'. Which hasn't changed in many years.
A new Tenor Sax player recently joined my Big Band. He had sax that looked to me 'unusual'. I asked him what it what it was and said it was a John Packer JP042 Bb Tenor. He explained that it was a 'temporary sax' while he was getting his Yamaha 'restored'. He added that he wasn't yet sure which one he'd stick with. With his permission I briefly tried out his sax with my mpc and reed. TBH the 'playability' of his (new) sax with mine was a huge difference between day (his) and night (mine)!
Yes I fully realize that the 'ergonomics' of saxes has moved on significantly between 1961 and the first mention of the John Packer JP042 on the cafe in 2011.
I 'Googled (AI)' my problem and it's advice (with recommendations) was to have my Tenor Sax refurbished (overhauled) by someone who has the 'credibility' of restoring 'vintage' (1961) saxes.
I've been interested in C Melody saxes, for a while.
Apparently, they were quite common in the 1920s-30s, and the general concensus seems to be that the designs got better as time went on. Earlier models were often made in High Pitch (a tuning system that predates using A=440Hz), and should be avoided, unless you want to accompany a Highland bagpipe player.
From what little research I've done, it seems Conn made some of the better sounding ones, and their later models were improvements over the earlier ones. The ones with a "straight" neck, similar to an alto, are supposed to be good. Personally, I don't really like the S shaped neck on a tenor.
Bristol is a bit far for me to visit so I asked if they could send me photos, particularly of the hand positions, because the ergonomics are a bit different on these old saxes, and C melody saxes in particular.
Ermm... there seems to be a 2 file upload limit. Hopefully, that's per post
The thumb rest is apparently soldered on, so can't be adjusted easily, but the position looks good for reaching the right side trill keys (Bb/C/high E). This seems to be an issue on the Sakkusu / Thoman C Melody (see https://cafesaxophone.com/threads/sakkusu-c-melody-saxophone-review.13705/Ads's Sakkusu C Melody review[/URL])
The "L" stamped below the serial number indicates it's built for "Low" pitch - i.e. designed for modern A=440Hz tuning. I've read different accounts of what was meant by High Pitch (and maybe there was more than one definition), but the consensus seems to be it was at least A=450Hz, or A=453Hz - kind of between semitones, in modern tuning, and too far out to compensate for by positioning the mouthpiece differently etc.
It's important to check for that when buying any brass or woodwind instrument from that period. I think military bands kept it going for a while longer, in Britain. Scottish bagpipe and Irish/Scottish Bb flute players tend to still use it, as I understand it. It's certainly the normal tuning for 5 or 6 key Bb flutes.
hey, ive been playing saxophone for roughly 13 years since i was 10 but got more serious in highschool specifically i play jazz and blues on tenor and soprano saxophone
joined this forum mainly to ask questions about technique
im looking to develop a warm and thick sound without sounding muffled or thin on the high notes, i really dislike when high notes sound thin on saxophone.
some saxophonists i enjoy listening to are king curtis, stanely turrnetine, johnny griffin, sal nistico, branford marsalis, lester young, james carter, eddie lockjaw davis, lee konitz, and charlie parker, but i listen to all sorts of musicians
