Your recommendations please!

A couple of things have happened recently - I took part in the inaugural music night at the Poplar Kitten in Harlow (thanks once again Pauly!), which made me realise a few things; 1, I love rock'n'roll' blues r'n'b and soul music when it comes to playing the saxophone 2, despite loving jazz I don't really think I'll ever have the application or time to get that good at it 3, things that stem basically from the blues (apart from folky and proggy stuff) is what's really in my blood 4, I really love, and am almost exclusively playing my tenor since the Music Night - it just seems to suit that style more than alto 5, hankering once again for a baritone, wouldn't that sounds great at the bottom end of some of those tunes....

So, who within that area of music would you recommend I listen to (I already hear a 'Big Jay McNeely' from his soul brother nachoman), especially tenor players. Taz and Dooce would do for starters 😉

As well as Big Jay- anything by Sam Butera (Louis Prima's sax man), Willis 'gatortail' Jackson or Joe Houston.

There is several compilation CDs around, one to check out is titled 'The Big Horn - History of Honkin' & Screamin' Saxophone' which features Big Jay McNeely, Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb, Paul Williams, Willis Jackson, Lynne Hope, Red Prysock and a lot of underrated tenor sax players. Other players to check out are Lee Allen, Noble 'Thinman' Watts, Sam 'the man' Taylor and a modern exponent of the genre is Sax Gordon a.k.a. Gordon Beadle.

P.S. And I suppose when can add some of the more obvious players like King Curtis, Junior Walker, and Plas Johnson, and the Crusaders, saxophonist and bassist, Wilton Felder, who is consided a "Texas Tenor" and another underrated player, David Woodford (tenor sax solo from "The Heat Is On")

Red Prysock: He was complete! Also a great blues singer. ?Hand Clappin??, ?Cryin? My Heart Out?, The Hammer??. . King Curtis: The one and only. Tons of tunes to check up. Freddie Mitchell: Excellent player. ?Slider?, ?The Derby??.. Underrated saxman. Big Jay McNelly: A great player and showman. The first song on a Big Jay gig could last for over an hour! Lee Allen: When it comes to Rock & Roll Saxophone he is #1. Jr Walker: ?Shotgun?, ?Cleo?s Mood?, ?Roadrunner?. Other honkers to listen to: Clifford Scott; Gene Barge, Les Coopper, Maxwell Davis, Noble ?Thin Man? Watts, Sam ?The Man? Taylor. Behind or beside some of this players there was often a good bari: Haywood Henry (Taylor,Curtis), Zack Wright (Prysock), Arleem Kareem (Freddie Mitchell), Paul Williams (he did well on his own), Robert McNeely (Big Jay), Red Tyler (Lee Allen), Mike Terry (Jr Walker + lots of Motown tunes), John Williams (Count Basie, Ike & Tina Turner ?).

Lenny Pickett, Joe Sublett, David ?Woody? Woodford, Plas Johnson, Clarence Clemmons, Sax Gordon, Steve Berlin, Greg Piccolo, Jim Horn and Eddie Shaw?? are other now living saxmen to look for. But there are lots of others. Don?t foget SteveDouglas (Phil Spector, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, JJ Cale, Mink Deville, Dyanne Eddy?). Even if he passed away for some years ago he is a contemporay honker.

I also listen a lot to: Andrew Clark, Sax Gordon, Don Wise (Delbert McClinton Band), Scott Shetler, Ben ?King? Perkoff, Glenn Shambroom, Big Walker, Dough James, Ron Dziubla, Bo ?Mighty Bo? Gustavsson, all the guys and gals who shows up on the Rocksax workshops, Kalle & Emil (young aspiring rock & roll saxophonists in the neighbourhood)?. .
