Hi all, just a few thoughts on a comparison made on thursday night when a friend bought his new 901 to band.
The Yani is finished to a higher standard cosmetically, where as the walstein has small parts that arnt perfect (a few machining marks etc) everything is spot on on the yani. The walstein has a bigger bell than the yani and maybe a slightly bigger bore but without measuring its difficult to tell. The walstein is a bit heavier, but with a harness not really noticeable.
The octave mech on the yani is almost like pressing a button, it has only 2 or 3 mm of travel and works perfectly where as the Walstein its more like a sax key with more travel probably 5-6mm.
The pearls on the yani feel like type writer keys they seem smaller and very hard and upright. The walsteins are a litle bigger and softer somehow. His was set up with slightly stiffer spring tension which made it feel snappier.
The Walstein sounded a bit warmer and we both agreed it was easier to play. Although the top end on the yani required less effort to keep the stregnth of tone but that was with the stock walstein mouthpiece. Overall they are both really nice saxes we found good but different things on both. There really is nothing to split them other than looks pink bronze Vs.Brass and feel of keys or slight difference in tone.
