Hi there!

I have just received a note from Mark at Trevor Jones to say that they have a stock of RICO GRAFTONITE MOUTHPIECES now in stock, including the B5 Alto and B5 Tenor :w00t:

Hope this is good news for some.
Kind regards

I ordered the alto. Don't know why it's more expensive.

As an aside, I found why my Walstein tenor was clonking on the bottom D - the little pad on the arm (not sure of the technical term) that returns to the bell when the key is released had come off. On closer inspection I found the F and E keys were a little wonky too, so I removed them and replaced them with a little super glue. Problem solved. I don't suppose this would happen with a Yani but then we didn't pay ?2000 for one, did we?

Just got my alto B5 and tried it with Rico Jazz Selects 2. It needs a lot more puff but produces a louder, brighter sound. I cannot get low B, which is no problem with my standard TJ or Yamaha mpc. I'll try it with some other reeds but if I really can't crack it I may have to look elsewhere, but at least it was only ?20.

Hi there!

I guess the B5 has a 0.080 tip opening, so perhaps a Marca Jazz 2 reed would hit the mark. If you PM me I could send you a couple to try. Which RJS is it - a 2M or 2H. Certainly it sounds like the Marca 2 would get the sound out (as well as sounding good!)
The Yamaha 4C is 0.063 tip opening - a large difference. Do PM me and I'll pop a couple in the post for you to try. My alto pieces are 0.085 and 0.089 respectively and I play either Francois Louis or Alexander DC in 2.5 strength which is more like a 2. An RJS 2H is certainly not as comfortable to play, nor is a V16 2.5 (which I used to use on my SuperSession E tip opening (0.078 ).

Kind regards

Just turned up about 30min's ago

I had my yam 5 on with a RJS 2M having a blow so switched them

Can't really tell any difference :S I think it's louder but not sure yet

Only that to tune it I have to pull it back a half inch from my yam mark, so about half way down the cork

Will try it the rest of the day with a couple of other reeds

After all my hard work behind the scenes you ca't even tell the difference

The good news is you are playing something which has a 95 tip opening(6*) rather than one with a c.75 tip. It should give you more room for expressive playing, but be good to hear what you think.

Maybe after a few days it will be an intersting comparison as it takes a while to change mouthpieces - I imagine that we are likely to play in such a way as to get a similar sound to what we are used to. When I get a new piece I need my wife (who has a very good musical ear) to give feedback, which is often more more varied than I imagine.

At least you can now join the Graftonite Society.

Just get a FL Basic Ligature for about ?17.00 and you'll be set up for life! 😉 (Seriously it has even replaced my famed EVO-5, which is going some)

Have a great w/e!

Well have been playing with it most of the day

It does have a nice tone, it is louder than the yam5, can really get the sax to vibrate, it's a lot like the T 75
No problems getting any note all were very good, soft or loud

I switched back to the yam just before stopping, the yam is easier to blow and is IMHO better for a beginner but then the yam is more centered

I am happy to keep the Graftonite and keep trying it, maybe needs a better player than me to get it to sing

Well worth the very small price

I fancy trying one of these for Tenor but can't find any way to order off the web site, does it only work with IE?

Can anyone advise what difference, if any, I would see between an Otto Link Tone Edge 6* and say the A and B chamber sizes?

I've had my mouthpiece a few days and now that I have sorted out my errant low B (due to a missing insert) I have had a chance to properly evaluate it.
The main difference is that it is harder to blow, which results in a much louder sound. Not only that but it is a hell of a lot brighter than the old mpc. Some of this is down to the Rico Jazz Selects anyway, and I noticed this before I had the new mouthpiece but there is a marked change in sound. If you want mellow then don't go for my set up (B5 with Jazz Selects 2H) but if you want to rock the joint then you may want to give this a try.
It would be interesting to compare this with a Graftonite with a larger chamber or opening -I went for the B5 because it was bang in the middle of the range. At these prices I may be tempted to get one for my tenor, although I am happy with my Yamaha 5C at present.
If anyone has used one of these with a tenor I would be interested to hear what you think.

Lloyd

Use one with my tenor and it's a much brighter, louder sound with Marca Jazz reeds 2 than the Yamaha 5C. I revert to the Yam for the balads, but it's the Graf for rock n roll and jazz. The Graf is pretty good with standard Rico reeds, slightly mellower, somewhere between the yam and graf, so something for everything.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
