When I first began playing I found the metronome really uncomfortable to play with.
After a while I gave up and never used one until about a year ago.
I love using them at really slow tempos to work out rhythms and then I can speed them up and drop the metronome.
As Tris said, it's feeling the beat. Knowing when it's going to tick and playing to your head with the click of the metronome just sitting there in the background aiding when your concentration falters or your fingers get a little tied up etc.
It is best used as a means of support and confidence building, and then not used at all once you're happy with the piece, allowing you to nudge the tempo in different directions depending on the effect you want. urgency or laid back expressiveness.
