Great Players Stan Getz - Voyage

I need to find a decent record player as I have quite a few of the original records.
This deserves a new thread. I just bought a second hand copy of "Stand Getz Plays" on vinyl
(here on the basic youtube sound quality)
and I am in need to buy a decent record player. Unfortunately the starting price seems to be £200

On 45rpm i've got an extended play "The artistry of Stan Getz (No.3)" which has "You turned the tables on me", "Stella by Starlight", Side 2 "Time on my hands" and "Body and soul" - There's no date on the record or the sleeve just SEB 10063... It says: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Jimmy Raney (guitar); Duke Jordan (piano); Bill Crow (bass); Frank Isola (drums) and Johnny Smith Quintet with Stan Getz playing "Moonlight in Vermont", "Where or When", "Tabou" and "Ghost of a chance".
POn 33 1/2 RPM in "Hi-Fi" I have West Coast Jazz with Stan Getz, Shelly Manne, Leroy Vinnegar, Conte Candoli and Lou Levy 27th July 1955.
Stan meets Chet 1958
Getz meets Mulligan in Hi-Fi (no date) all by Columbia records.

When an old record says "Hi fi" on the sleeve, what does that mean exactly? Were these the days before stereo? I know that it is much better quality that Mono.
Also, would a modern set up play a vintage record and make the sound quality much better, or would it be the same as playing it on an old vintage thing?
Please forgive my ignorance.. i've not had one since the last of my stylus' broke at the end of the 1980s and then my mum just charmingly threw it away while I was moving around in London.

Can you translate this into language that technology impaired folks like me can understand?
Have I scared you with the term "conversion"?
On one side you have the most beautiful analog system for music reproduction: the record player.
On the other side you have the magic of computers, that think in terms of numbers.

To go from one to the other you need a "converter" (let's ignore the different output level of a record player).
Converters cost fro few p to several k. I suspect that the ones inside a cheap usb record player are no better than the ones on the input socket of a computer. A cheap audio interface (like my focusrite scarlett) is probably better than both.
Some turntable makers make a preamp/converter dedicated to this job: http://www.rega.co.uk/fono-mini-a2d.html

As it happens, prices vary a lot.

I guess it was simply a marketing term. I think that you may find mono recordings labeled "hi-fi".
Record making technology has been mostly unchanged since about 1956. Cutting skills and pressing make a difference more than vintage/modern.
Apparently the worst vinyl quality was achieved in the 80s (another long story).

Here's an explanation of hi-fi.
