i would like to put our very own Simon up for discussion..
i love his playing..
i was due to go see him on Sunday in south port but a family commitment has come up, so I'm unable to attend. a few of my friends are going and one is probably more of a tubby fan than Simon (if you could ever get more of a fan)..i remember him saying hearing Simon Spillett on the radio and saying that's a tubby tune Ive never heard before, not knowing it was SS..
its really good to see someone succeeding at something that they obviously love.. i salute you.

good luck with the gigs , and sorry i cannot be there..

ps Ive been working on a transcription of tubby & Ronnie's version of A Foggy Day ( one of the best) got the first chorus done. not sure if its 100% right. sounds good harmonically..what i was wondering was is there any publishers printing tubby transcription that you know of..

I've seen Simon play two or three times and very good he is too, proper tenor playing with a big, authorititave tone. There is a lot of Tubby in there but also the flow of ideas of a Sonny Rollins. He has recently released a CD called Introducing Simon Spillett which is on my list!

I've just been into my local emporium and ordered it. While I was there, I found a nice Joe Henderson CD called In'n Out, featuring Kenny Dorham, McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones. It's from 1964, so I'm expecting the Jones constantly-evolving drum churn/solo to be in full effect.

Yes, mfox, it's very good, and not a million miles in sound and feel from McCoy Tyner's 'The Real McCoy' album, with Jones and Henderson, from about the same time. I think I slightly prefer the Tyner album though. I love that churning kaleidoscopic effect you get with Elvin and McCoy, where there's obviously a strong pulse but bar-lines seem to shift or even disappear. No wonder Trane could keep going as long as he did at times over that kind of drive and power.

The Southport gig went very well and was a sell-out. Since then I've been in Birmingham, the 606 in London and Swansea.

The Birmingham gig was with drummer Tony Levin, of Mexican Green fame. It was wonderful to work with him, especially as we played a lot of the music he used to play with Tubby.
