Selmer price

If you get a JK don't get one with the soldered-in rings "R" models, shadows etc. get a plain sx90 older model up to serial-no.1125xx. Putting those rings in there was the daftest thing JK ever did.
And don't mention "Thelmas" me neither, when I first played pro I went through three in quick succession - they just fell apart looking at 'em.
I've played JK tenor for not sure but very long now, but I got a very nice, ex-trade-fair Jupiter alto a couple of years ago, superb tone, similar feel to the JK's, and very solid build, hardly ever been in the shop for a service - It doesn't always have to be big bucks, big 5, these days. A solid well-built, no-name horn with a spot on set up is more than often the better buy.

I play a Ref54 Alto - awesome sound IMHO, which I use with a Ponzol vintage HR 85. It sounds a good price. At the time I bought mine it certainly seemed to be rated the best Alto sax - on Sax On The Web forum by some distance. We all have different sound concepts, though, and Pete doesn't seem to like them. Never tried a Keilworth, so offer no opinion.

Tough one, but do think it is good value.
Good luck

Hi,

Hi to you Ben
I am not sure it is pos to get a vintage sound with that M2, or for that matter any Metal Alto M.P. Accept maybe an old link on a very dark Selmer B.A.
If i were you i would have a go with one of Ed Pillengers New York Alto M.P.s ......Before i got myself an Alto.

for that money you could buy a yamaha custom horn.. try a few different horns.. but as pete said selmers are hit or miss, it took me quite a few to get the semer i have now.

I'm very happy with my 'previously enjoyed' i.e. oldish YAS-62 which I've had for about 3 years - it makes most evry sound I want to get using a metal Yani mouthpiece. Maybe a Selmer is the one for you, but obviously you'll only find out by trying it - even then you'll only know if that particular one suits you. I've not played one myself, but the opinion on them does seem to be that they can vary (true of most horns, I guess) and that some of the 'cache' models have a tendency to be a little overpriced. Not that I would try and put you off or anything....

my penny worth, i recently upgraded to a Mauriat 66R, which i find amazing, but did try cannonballs, yanagisawas, yamahas and selmers. i was so excited about the prospect of trying out the selmer after hearing so much hype about them. Was distictly underwhelmed by the sound. As you are no doubt understanding through the forum we all have our own tastes, so it will be down to you. good luck Phil :w00t:

I think for the money you could buy yourself an equally as good horn like some suggested here (my preference an old Yammy 62) with a mouthpiece you like and have enough money left for another great horn, like a baritone (Walstein, G4M, Weltklang) if you don't have one, or a soprano.

Maybe a traveling tenor if you gig a lot or some recording equipment if you don't have any to help with your practice and be able to listen to yourself improve.

Or you could use the spare cash to holiday for a week and woodshed somewhere for a while.

Hi all,
Many thanks for all of your adviece and opinions. I have made arrangements to try the Selmer against the JK, Yani, Yam Custom and Mauriats. I will post again when I have made a choice. I am looking forward to the problem of choosing though.
Concerning mpc, I use Otto Link rubber also for alto and going to try various mpcs with the saxes.
Good to see and hear from so many interested sax players. Thanks once again.

Sorry, I should of made my post clearer. It's been edited now anyway.

Personally I don't like metal pieces, and a jumbo java was too much. I tried various other java pieces. It came down to the T75 and the T95 (which was a bit too open for me) and also a Yanigasawa 7* (I play these on alto and think they're also definitely worth a play too).

Ben, it might be a good idea to try out all the saxes with your own mouthpiece first, and with a trusty rather than new reed. You will at least be familiar with this setup, and won't be introducing too many variables at once which could confuse you as to which horn you actually prefer.

Good luck choosing, anyway!

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
