Please introduce me (tenor player)

Hello everyone please forgive me about my English skill.

Well...now I play Alto sax but I think I like Tenor or Soprano rather than it. In soprano I love Kenny G, he is my hero.But I think I would like to know about tenor player before I decide to change.
So please introduce me some tenor player. I love romantic&sweet sound.

Sorry no ones answered you. I myself have been trying to think of 'romantic and sweet' tenor players. I can name many any players but may not be what you're after. Anyway, I will stick to some I THINK are of the ilk you are after:-

Stanley Turrentine

Coleman Hawkins

Stan Getz

I don't know of any players that I would call "romantic and sweet". Maybe my wife thinks I'm romantic and sweet but that's different to my tenor playing.

Seriously though, I know plenty of players who can play romantic and sweet, but only part of the time - I don't know any that I would just define like that. Maybe you should be asking for specific recordings?

It ouyld be the "sweet" that is the tricky bit, and maybe that is where your English/translation skills are letting you down. I can see how some Kenny G can be called sweet, but that may be more to do with his soprano tone and not so easy to find tenor players with a sweet sound. Saxplayer67 has probably got the closest with Stan Getz and yes, Coleman Hawkins at times is sweet and romantic.

So can Ben Webster, but can also be very gruff and macho.

Yes very true. Naima is probably a good example, but also the ballads album.

many may disagree with me, but I would also mention Gato Barbieri and Plas Johnson. Much of this is very subjective

As you know romantic can only define by yourself. I know it too but I don't have any idea that can explain it... >.<

Also check out Ben Webster. I have his CD "The Warm Moods" it's just what you are looking for, love songs. Ballad is the best word to explain what you want. Good luck with your search.

There is an album called 'Sax on Silk' by Castle Pulse records, I've got it. Should be able to find it online somewhere.

It's got 20 tracks, mostly all tenor ballads. Sounds ideal.

You could pick out some tracks from that you like and look into the artists.
Some Artists include:
Ben Webster, Lester Young, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins and Illinois Jacquet

man... stay away form Kenny G! ARGH! So many much better players with alot less cheese in their playing!

Chris Potter, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Lester Young, Micheal Brecker, Joshua Redman, Dexter Gordon.... It shouldn't matter what sax these guys play there are some equally great alto players to listen out for. Such as Kenny Garrett! But don't follow the path of Kenny G! (not Kenny G is not Kenny Garrett)

Sorry if I sound angry but I have a servere loathing for Kenny G. Especially after I read that article by Pat Metheny about Kenny G taking the horn players off classic like Bird and Armstrong recordings and inserting his own lame playing over the top.

Um...well... may be DanMays doesn't understand me so I'll explain again for more clear.

I play alto sax for first because my teacher told me that "You Should go with alto first." but as you know I prefer soprano to alto.
By the way, I've never listened some good tenor player.
So I would like to know about some tenor artist for consider which sax I will play(soprano or tenor).

I 've already listened Stan Getz now. I think he's the great one.
Next week I'll buy John Coltrane's cd and I 'll tell you how about it. 😉

Watch out for Coltrane, although he could play ballad-like, sweeter material, he would go far-out with screeches and squarks and so on. The CD I have with the ballads is on the GRP label and is a compilation of two Impulse LPs, with Duke Ellingotn and Johnny Hartman.

Bob Berg played some beautiful sounds. Check out him with guys like drummer Pete Erskine and guitarist Mike Stern.

I like Ernie Watts' sound too - he's a very able tenor player and is heard on all sorts of music (Cannonball Adderley through to the Rolling Stones, tv themes etc)
