hi. new to this. have picked up the horn(tenor) after 30 year absence.played a lot of jazz in big bands and smaller groups. at 70 this is quite a challenge. re the music, some things came back to me fairly quick, others are a little slow in coming. if one is fairly familiar with their horn i would opt for the intermediate music, for the challenge and the interest. one of the main obstacles i,m trying to overcome is that i,m having trouble counting and playing at the same time.i know the phasing so play anyway, not really the way to do it

Hi Robert
Welcome to the forum. Its fantastic that you've picked up your tenor again - go for it!
Regarding your problem with counting and playing. I've found the purchase of a metronome has really helped me get the "counting" in a piece ingrained in me.
Get a metronome that will mark the beginning or end of a bar with a different beep, clunk or whatever. Then - pick the piece you want to work on and set the metronome going to about half the suggested tempo and count though the piece without your horn. When you are comfortable with that, do the same with the horn and increase the tempo on the metronome slightly each time until you are playing it up to speed. Really concentrate on the fact you are getting the timing correct.
It worked for me anyway!
All the best

Robert,

Welcome, and enjoy picking up the sax again.

I'd say be positive, 30 years is along time so it will not all come back at once. It was there before so practice will get it again. Remember what it was like learning to count and play first time around.

I'm a beginner so its first time round for me and its not coming easy. I bet you get it back before it clicks with me. 🙂
