and it appears to work - by all accounts - from press and personal reviews I've come across - 50% is probably wishful thinking on behalf of the maker, none the less, a considerable step forward in saxophone muting after all these years. can be ooohed and aaahed at www.saxmute.com - is also featured on Fred Lebayle's website, and distributed in the UK from Bill Lewington.

Unfortunately putting a sock in it, doesn't work because a swinging air column has to be maintained through the horn, however Fred's strategically placed open mesh whatevers allow enough air and sound waves through to support the note whilst dampening it at the same time, clever lad our Fred.
 
totally with you on this- loads of resistance but they do what it says on the tin- the resistance probably makes 'em good lung exercisers if you want to get into training for blowing up hot water bottles as a circus sideshow!
