Lou Donaldson

On theJazz this evening, I heard 'Funky Mama' by Lou Donaldson and fell in love with the tune and Lou's playing.

It wasn't big or clever, just a chunky medium-shuffle blues that totally grooved from start to finish, with some beautiful organ-playing alongside Lou's horn. I do like a bit of organ-playing!

Any more info about the player, the track or the album gratefully received.

Lou Donaldson made a great album with art blakey alongside Clifford Brown.. just about the best ever version of "a night in Tunisia" on the album.. early 60s went more funky. did alligator boogaloo..got the music to funky mama if you want me to send to you.. but its such an easy tune shouldn't take long to work out..i always think of it as a guitar tune..

I remember borrowing a Lou Donaldson Album in '75 and taping it, it was great, I carried the tape around in a shoebox for years, I wonder where it is now. There was an organ player on there, but it wasn't Jimmy Smith. Dear oh dear Mr. B.G. you're gonna get me in trouble with the plastic card company.

Spike, that'll be the organist on Natural Soul, probably. Maybe your shoebox contained that very album.

Lou used 'Lonnie Smith' a lot on organ.. "aligator boogaloo" "reverend moses" to name two.. also an up and coming guitarist called 'George Benson' ever heard of him 'he he'

If you like this sort of stuff there is an absolutely fantastic album called "Hip Hammond & Soulful Grooves" its a compilation of about 25 tunes of this era..i like them all, which is unusual for a compilation album

Hip Hammond & Soulful Grooves, still available? Any Jimmy McGriff on it? I like him a lot, especially when Hank Crawford is blowing in there. Right Turn On Blue, top album! Even dear old Georgie Fame does it for me.

I believe "Blues Walk" is a sort of signature tune for him.

Turtle Walk playing right now on theJazz, very funky blues with horns, organ and guitar (Benson?). Lou has an excellent tone, not too brash.
