Playing the saxophone Learning to Read v Playing by ear

Presumably your instrument fluency isn’t at the same level as your speaking voice? There’s your main answer.
Not really; the point I was making is that after 35 years I still cannot recognise note groups on the written page. It has nothing to do with an instrument - I have the same problem singing in the choir I attend.

During the holidays, the ability to read music opens an important door. I can participate in private Christmas parties and not need to memorize the Christmas tunes. I don't like Christmas music or children, but we make sacrifices for the paycheck.

Memorize Christmas songs? Like jingle bells and all the other ones that are ingrained in our heads from birth?
If the songs in your head then you should be able to transfer it to the horn.
That's what happens when you don't read music. You develop good finger brain memory.
Christmas songs are mostly simple. Think we should all be able to play them without sheet music. Naw?

You’re assuming you’re playing the tune and not the harmony. As a bass singer I rarely get the tune and apart from a few tunes, I need the music to at least prompt me

I wish that we performed our Christmas music similar to nursery rhymes, but they are a little more complicated than a child's story book. The band leader changes arrangements and key signatures, so reading music also helps to quickly acclimate to that situation.

What a horrible thought - to have such dreadful music stuck in your head...
Yeh - it's dreadful isn't it Dave ? I wake up screaming sometimes singing "Happy Birthday" "Wish You a Merry Chritsmas" "Take Five" "Let it Be" - the other day it was the German National National Anthem - must be nice to have a head that's not stuck with such horrible thoughts.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
