Sheet Music Johnny Hodges Transcriptions?

Hi all

Apologies if I'm repeating a past thread.

There seem to be no Johnny Hodges transcriptions out there! No Rabbit! I've found 'All of Me' and 'Things Ain't What They Used To Be' but that's about it. I really want 'I've Got It Bad and That Ain't Good' and 'I Didnt Know About You' in particular.

Now, I know I'll be told to have a go myself, and I'd love to! But I'm new to transcribing and it would be great to have something to work from and study alongside the recordings. I imagine because of the deceptive simplicity of a lot of Hodges solos (slower, fewer notes but LOTS of expressive playing) people are less inclined to transcribe them and share?

If anyone knows of a source for Hodges transcriptions, please let me know! Thanks.

Hi @Alexandra and Hodges is a great choice to study/copy/transcribe.

I get quite a few transcriptions from Curtis Swift of saxsolos.com. At the moment he is listing 28 transcriptions by Johhny Hodges: he charges a small amount ($1 or $2 typically) for each solo he has already transcribed but quite a bit more to do a new transcription by special request.

SaxSolos.com - Transcriptions Curtis lists his solos by song title and also by artist name, but sorted by first name rather than surname.

Last year I transcribed "Shady Side" by Hodges and Gerry Mulligan, including the 32 bar theme and one whole improvised chorus by each of them. It was fun to do and you're welcome to have a copy of it if you like.

There are threads on this forum about how to go about doing a transcription and several members who can offer good advice.

Good luck and welcome to the Caff.

Rhys

Put the record on and play with him. You'll probably never sound like him, even if you play the same notes. There are apps to slow things down while you get to grips with a piece.

Studying the harmony of a song will teach you much more than reading a transcription imo. Try a lead sheet with the chords. Learn all the chord tones and try adding passing notes to connect them up.

Being influenced by a player but being yourself, is much more satisfying for me than copying. Myself I like to blend Hodges with Desmond, ending up like neither. Desodges 😉

Thank you! I think I'll focus on more playing-along and get some tips on transcribing like you suggest. I wouldn't say no to the transcription of 'Shady Side' but I feel like I should give it a go first. I get impatient but I do find I play better when I listen and play (even if it's far from perfect, it's more freeing) than when I'm staring at a sheet all the time.

Same as John Paul Hodgemond.

Hi! I'm learning to play Shady Side.... Would it be possible to have a copy of your transcription???

Glad this was brought up again.
Family left me home alone, so I'm free to leave the soundproof room and play the Picc. Just the neighborhood Cats, in the overgrown backyard. They love it as they can chase butterflies and bees.
Only played it on Alto, long ago,
in an earlier life. :old:

Good key for Picc. D5-C8
Plus blowin' on Whipping Post and
Hot 'Lanta, '70 at the Fillmore version.
Two drummers and no Piccolo? 🙁

I'd love a copy of your transcription of 'Shady Side'. It's such a delightful paring of two inspiring musicians. I'd like to do version for a sax workshop performance we have every few months. If you could send me copies of the music I'd be very grateful. My email is removed by mods please use DM to share.

Many thanks, Richard

The links in my posts above should still be live so you can click and download the transcription and the backing track I made.

Good luck

Rhys

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
