Message: <blockquote data-quote="Wade Cornell" data-source="post: 625157" data-attributes="member: 1787">That's so very kind of you!  I do post a lot of tracks.  There a repository of three hundred on this site that were brought here in an agreement between the site "Wikiloops" and Pete here at the Cafe.  They were for the purpose of giving novel original tracks (rather than "standards") for players here to practice playing/improvising by ear.   There's two tracks in each post, one that's just the backing and one with my playing to give people some ideas of ways to approach a novel piece of music.  This is something that Pete Thomas is in favor of, yet there is a very established routine of practices with known tunes/standards.   That is very much reinforced by the academic style of improvisation instead of players trying to become one with their instrument so that they can play what they hear in their heads or to match something totally novel. Playing known tunes and practicing them is more than OK, as any practice helps us with all aspects of becoming better musicians.  However if an individual has professional aspirations, or would like to improvise playing melodies, original music, or something more personal, then the standard type of practice doesn't tend to lead them to that point.  It's about presenting an alternative practice routine.
