Check very carefully the sound (and intonation) of the notes in the middle of the upper register, some baritones can be very dead in this area.

I don't think the bronze makes the difference, it's more the quality of the build on the instrument that sets it apart from most student instruments.

Here's hoping the cheap bari isn't made with soft metal, poor keyworks, and suspicious intonation problems. 😱

Well, Gandalfe, it would seem from opinions expressed in here (and one or two people have played/own Walsteins) that the cheapie brands gear4music and Walstein are pretty good horns, but no direct experience of the bari as yet.

I have a g4m alto and it rocks, if the bari is made to the same standard then it'll be good. The alto is based on a Yani 991, I don't know about the Bari, also funny monopen on the bottom.

Its the same bari as was recently shown on a German website Spike told us about, he stated they wouldn't put their name to it if it was crap.

Just a quick update, phoned woodwind and brass up today for a chat about the Walstein baritone. It turns out it was made as a small batch of sax's for appraisal, at a different factory. There are a few small issues that need tweaking before a production run. Things like a plastic thumb rest and something with octave mechanism which has been sorted out in the workshop.

They only have one left so I have ordered it with a 7 day return option if its no good. They wont have anymore for a few months and when they do the price will be increased maybe.

Overall a great service from a very helpfull and above all honest lady. Its due on Thursday so I'll post again then.
