Courtney Pine (in Southampton, Thurs 7th Feb)

I know there's a number of Southamptonites here, just wondered if anyone is going along? He's at the Turner Sims this week doing a tribute to Sidney Bechet.

I've seen 'Pine' before when headlining (him, not me!) at a Bournemouth Jazz Festival, years ago. Came across as pretty self-indulgent then, with endless circular breathing execrices and such but no doubt his style/approach/experience has changed considerably since then, as have my tastes.

Interesting to read about Sydney Bechet, as I didn't really know much about him. There are a few titbits on YouTube (mostly on soprano) for anyone who's interested, just type in hs name in the search.

I'm still in two minds about this one, does anyone want to talk me into going?

Hmmmm, I never got very excited about his playing, but I do think he's very very good, just not my cup of tea. Bechet tribute sounds interesting though. I'll have to think about that.

I could be tempted, I'm about an hour or less from there, I keep meaning to go to something at the Stables, and my sister-in-law who lives up that way (Olney) is a bit of a regular.
