This afternoon I was playing Renaissance string music and a piece by Byrd (so late 1500s) in which some parts are playing in 3/2 (so 3 in a bar) and some are playing 6/4 (2 in a bar). who says C20th invented cross-rhythms!

So now I've got to count, as well as remembering which keys to twiddle, as well as remembering when to breathe in and when to blow out?

That's multitasking, I'm not very good at multitasking...

Do you drive a car?
Having recently been out with my 17 year old who is learning to drive, and who plays clarinet and violin, I think you can compare the multi-tasking requirements.

She, however, has mastered the musical multi-tasking, having learnt an instrument from a very young age, but only been driving a few months.
I, on the other hand, have mastered the driving multi-tasking, having been driving for far more years than she has been alive, but only playing sax for 4 years. 🙂))

Eventually it becomes second nature.
