Saxophones Conn 10m.... Could this be the one?

Took me a while to find it. @teen37 as you say, under the Taming The Saxophone page rather than the Cafe,
No it’s listed as Yardsale directly in the Cafe saxophone discussion menu > Forum sections. TTS has a feed but it’s not as reliable as the direct listings here in the Yardsale.

When it comes to old "vintage" saxes I recommend to buy from a shop with a good repairdept/ or from a reairman that sell saxes as well.

Buy "ready to play" saxes. A sax 60-80 years old that's been played a lot over the years, needs ,more or less, a complete mechanical renovation and a proper set-up. These saxes are expensive. Maybe it's possible to buy two used YTS 62 or two Yani T-880 for the same money as one vintage horn.

I have just test-played one of the "vintage" saxes I've bought over the years; "The Martin Magna Tenor". I was lucky! It was a good player in good condition, still is, when I bought it. The other vintage saxes I had better players than me to test-play. I bought most of the saxes from USA.

My best tenor I bought ready to play, 1995, from Progressive Winds, NJ, USA. I think it was one of the guys at Tenor Madness that made the renovation. I've just done two reapairs on the Martin HC -38: Replaced the neck cork and the palm F pad. I bought extra De'jur Deluxe pads the other years so I could replace the pads with the same pads which were installed when it was renovated.

Here is a place you can buy good saxes from: Barnard Instrument Repair

I hope I didn't killed the sax search for you.

Musical instruments.....funny things.

People can absolutely fall in love with them on a playtest or two at someone's house or a shop....then get home and use it or play it in their band, then over a short period of time...

The Thrill is Gone.

Something which they though they heard, the cannot now find. Perhaps a note fingering which they ran thru quickly before now feels ergonomically strange. Maybe intonation now doesn't quite seem what it initially did. Maybe the upper register sounds less...whatever....you get the idea...

One can always sell it. If it is a somewhat reputed model, familiar...you'd probably be able to turn it for within 10-15% of what you paid for it. Unless you paid brand new retail price....

So it isn't like you got soaked for your decision....

So, IMHO, not a HUGE commitment, buying a new horn....

I have met younger players who spend thier money on a "dreamhorn". The right brand, model, patina ....... just one problem the saxes were not playing well. A used S20 (cleveland, no fully pearl tenor, double socket "silver" neck) that was making bubbles when he played. A SML Rev D tenor what was ready for the bench. Both saxes were bought for c 20. 000 sek (15 years ago). To turn these saxes to better players than a good used YTS 62 or a Yani T-880 they had to spend 12.000 -16.000 s e k.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
