I can listen to his playing with monk over and over again and you pick out new bits everytime that flaw you. It's great playing, great ideas and a great sound. Top that off with great performances as well. Marvelous.
i just love this guys playing and always have..he always sounds like he can't be bothered playing anything too hard (although what he plays is hard) just enough and no more....
i have the monk coltrane concert.. and while JC solos are way more complex than CRs i prefer CRs.. he fits in with monk way better for that overall monk sound...i would have loved to see this band live..
I agree with you totally mfox, Rouse just goes together with Monk like no-one else. Have a listen to the Live At The It Club double CD, and there's an album called 5 by 5 by Monk which has the quartet augmented by, ooh, can't remember, may be Clark Terry on cornet. The album has the excellent 'Jackie-ing' which although it sounds totally natural is a tune of 14 bars.
