BOTM BOTM November 2020: It Never Entered My Mind

@nigeld asked me to host the Ballad of the Month thread for November and I have chosen a lovely and melancholy song from a 1940 musical - "It Never Entered my Mind". The lyrics by Lorenz Hart are moving and go perfectly with the tune by Richard Rodgers.

There have been some excellent jazz recordings, for example this one by Miles Davis with tasty piano by Red Garland:

There are many fine vocal recordings of it, for instance this by my favourite current singer, Ian Shaw, with a fine tenor solo by Iain Ballamy:

The lead sheets and backing tracks I have made so far can be downloaded from here. There are two versions of the jazz ballad backing in Concert F, one at 70bpm with three choruses and the other at 60bpm with two choruses, both backings can be used with the same lead sheets (Bb and Eb versions provided). The final bar has a diamond shown, which basically means just go wild improvising over the last chord.

Another recording is by George Shearing who combines It Never Entered My Mind as a waltz with Erik Satie's "Gymnopedie No. 1". I took that as inspiration for another backing track as a jazz waltz in Concert C, with the Gymnopedie tune appearing at various points (shown on the lead sheets) and played by the vibraphone.

Of course you can use other backing tracks and there are good ones from Jamey Aebersold (Vol. 131) and Hal Leonard (Vol. 46).

I'm looking forward to hearing the recordings people make during the month (and beyond). Will anyone try a vocal ?

Rhys

PS You may have noticed that this song has a conventional AABA structure, but unusually the final A section has ten bars instead of eight, so don't let that throw you.

Whilst you ponder that, take a listen to Liane Carroll playing and singing her heartfelt version:

Lovely tune @rhysonsax, perfect for a rainy Sunday. I had a quick go this morning. I obviously need to work on the high notes a lot more! But never mind, some parts are alright (for me).

I used a Legere American Cut 2.5 on this, in case anyone is interested. For my taste, they are a little bit better than the signature.

What a great start to the month - a fine take and really well recorded and mixed !

You're getting a lovely sound, especially down the bottom end, and you seem very relaxed at this tempo.

It seems to suit the tenor so well, I wonder whether we will get many contributions on the other saxophones.

Keep them coming

Thanks Rhys, I think I finally got lucky with the microphone position in my booth... I'll have to see if it also works for alto and soprano.

First try.Leblanc Full Rationale Alto sax, Selmer S90, Rigotti Classic 3 reed. Reverb added with Marshall guitar pedal in line. Single take.

Really nice take and it shows that the tune can work well on alto. It had fine tone and timing - for me the amount of reverb was a bit too much, but that might be because I was listening on headphones.

Who's going to try a baritone or soprano recording ?

Barely ready three days on, but here's naked truth:

edit: Already updated once to follow lyrics better. Might try another key for fun.

That was really lovely. I hadn't imagined the song with that sort of feel, but it works really well. A nice, straightforward reading of the tune, but naked or not, it sounded great.

Three days into the month and three fine versions submitted already. If this rate keeps up we will have more than I can count by the end of the month.

Struggled with my last new reed! Difficult getting it to speak properly. Straight take.

WOW ! That's really made my day - it worked so well. Really fine soprano tone and tuning and a gentle take that shows it can work as a waltz.

I was hoping you would come in with few twiddly improvised bits at the end and you did !

I can hardly keep up with all the different recordings, but keep them coming.

CHALLENGE FOR BRAVE TENOR PLAYERS

There is a great live recording of this tune by Stan Getz, which has been discussed on another thread over here.

Getz plays it in the difficult key of concert B (five sharps) , so Db on the tenor (five flats) and then he modulates to concert G and plays an amazing cadenza.

Last month I transcribed Stan's solo and then I compared it with the one already done and shared by @Hankenstine in that thread. I took his chords and made a backing track using Band in a Box. I also transcribed the piano intro and outro by Oscar Peterson and the bowed bass outro by Ray Brown which I added onto the BiaB backing by doing an audio export from Sibelius.

And I did another audio export from Sibelius of the transcribed saxophone solo as played by the "robot Getz".

Have we got any tenor players who would like to try to play Stan Getz's solo with this backing track ?

I think it will take me the rest of my life to play this solo, but I will try to post something by the end of the month.
