BOTM BOTM November 2020: It Never Entered My Mind

Thanks @guidocreo , nice tenor sound and a good mix.

You started in the right place (after the 4 bar introduction) with a gentle reading of the tune, but you fell behind by the start of the second A section, so when you got to the bridge (B section) you were two bars behind the tune.

The drummer on the backing track changes to sticks for the second chorus but you were still finishing off the head.

As well as learning the form of a tune with chord tones played as long notes, it is a good idea to read through the lead sheet and sing the tune, out loud or in your head, to really embed the harmony in your mind. And try to really hear where in the backing track there is a change of section, usually signaled by the drummer playing a fill or changing from brushes to sticks and vice versa.

Some tunes have chord changes that are much harder to keep your place than others and I guess that this is one of those.

I find that when I play, my ears sort of close down because I'm concentrating on the playing side (ideas, technique, note choices, rhythm etc) and I am much less aware of the rhythm section. If you listen back to your recording while looking at the lead sheet, do you see where the change of sections are happening in the backing and spot where what you played differs from that ?

I realized this is one of those songs that don't get into my head easily 🙁: I will continue to struggle with it all month.

Ciao and thanks for your hear.
This tune has a very odd way of repeating the phrases after that first one. It is indeed hard, or at least was for me, to place them properly. But like one of the optical illusions where if you stare at it long enough, you see the dolphin, once you hear those three phrases in their place, you won't have any trouble with it... until the bridge which also has a funny phrase structure in the first part. You'll get it! Just like if you look at this image long enough, you will see a ____________. (Hint: NOT a dolphin)

This is one of those tunes I can't hear.

But can you see the ______?

The optical illusion, an analogy with the melody you said you can't hear.
I agree it's very hard to hear the melody of this song with its three phrases that are nearly alike, the third one feeling like it should not be there. Then the funny long space in the bridge. It took me a long time to perceive this structure.

That was excellent. The feel of the track was really good and the sound of the plastic tube suited it very well.

Not quite enough to make we want one of those Yamaha tubes but it's the best non-saxophone version yet !

Thanks, man, I think it can make music after all. Here's the thing: the sax sounds are 90% awful. Think of the worst sax sound on a synth, I think these are worse. Roland used to have a sample player (U110???) that sounded like a real tenor if you could play the dynamics. I realize that in such a small piece of electronics, it's hard (=very expensive) to get better sounds. There are two sounds that, with really careful adjustment on a DAW or amp, sound almost realistic. The chromatic harmonica (which, if distorted and played right can also give you blues harp) and the flutes. Except all of them have the bloody auto vibrato which immediately makes it sound like a beginner. This forces you to avoid long notes or try to dilute the auto with a conflicting one. >:)

This is very interesting à-propos

The tenor is sounding really good, so I guess you have settled on the Grassi and aren't worrying about other suitors. But which mouthpiece ?

That was recorded on a Yamaha YTS-62 (Mk I, post purple logo). I got it a couple of months ago and I'm really enjoying it.
It came with a Yanagisawa hard rubber mouthpiece (6 opening) that seems to suit it.

It's a classic and the article is right about the importance of Red Garland's piano on this recording. I was looking for a Miles-style backing track for "It Never Entered .." and did find one that had something close for the piano but a horrible intrusive drum beat on it and absolutely no subtlety !

Can you do a Harmon-muted sound on your Yamaha ?
