Yeah, must admit I wanted to play them after I heard my teacher play them...and he doesn't play soprano 🙂 sadly I neva recorded him.

Something diffident, and for a porpoise. You may have seen that I have a spare Soprano Sax that I've donated to the site. My preference is that someone who posts, or will post here gets to use it, so Jeanette said that I can mention it here...so, I've recorded Smile on it...and on the one I got to replace it (full story in the YardSale thread).

Of course it's difficult for me to 'demonstrate' it, coz I can't play it 🙂 ...so I recorded it on both to hear the difference (not a lot on the recording actually, but live my intermediate one does have more 'body'). I posted someone playing one in the Yardsale thread also.

It's ok, I used to sound awful, now I'm just bad 🙂 I'm happy I'm getting better. I sound better than Coltrane, but not as good as Getz 🙂

Not bad now slap a backing on that thing! (I've always thought playing a capella is like playing with a safety net - you don't have to worry about the timing) 😉

It is so hard to play a piece that slow and make it sound great but you are heading in the right direction. Maybe some reverb on the sax to smooth the punchy stuff out?

I agree it IS a lovely old tune and so I couldn't help but try a take. I had a midi that didn't sound bad so I used it as my backing. I also downloaded a great sounding MP3 backing that I would like to do another version with but for now:

What a laid back, swingy but mellow vibe for this tune. This is again, another completely different mood for the same song.

As previous posts have mentioned, a slow ballad such as this is really hard to pull off. Just because the changes are simple does not mean easy! Anyway, here is a soprano take, this time with backing from Band in a Box.

Good job playing Bill and nice backing. To me it sounds like the backing could be louder in the mix or the sax backed down but then you may want it mixed that way and that's your prerogative after all it's your art! 🙂
