Don't tell me you prefer David Sanborn's version. I really hated that one... I guess it's his sound that I don't like. Yuck. 😵

For me listening to Dexter was healing! 😎

I really like Dexter Gordon it was rather his treatment of this particular song that I don't like. In general I don't like arrangements are made out of context IMHO this one doesn't work interesting though it may be. I would have preferred him to sound as he does on his albums Go, Ballads, Biting the Apple. Regards Al

are you sure? Apart from the odd bar, most of it is unrecognisable to me. Nice sound, but a totally unrecognisable sea of notes.

Listen to the first 39 seconds, I think it is there but the pace and style make it hard to pick out. After that he gets into improvisation and that is a different matter.

@Tiberius I think it is just the tempo getting the better of you. The head is pretty much all there, the improv is just 'Dexter' playing like only Dexter could. 🙂

Ok, same backing as I used before, but well speeded up, nearly double speed I think. All one take. First time through just the notes (with a couple of mistakes 🙂). Second kinda solo, mosly in G (F#), but there's a Bb chord in, so I tried to stick Bb and C# in, but I think I missed the chord 🙂

It seemed to me that you delayed one bar on the second lap, you accelerated so much the backing that you stay behind 🙂 Improvisation, good effort keep practicing.

Yeah...actually doesn't seem to be because of speeding it up. I played this with my teacher and no matter what speed we ran it at, I was always behind 🙂 Sadly won't get much time to practice today, but next week for sure.

There is a saying about learning the sax and that is if you can't play it slow you will never play it fast. Plus songs like this are great for giving long tones a new twist🙂
