I had to look up "impaccable". This is a weak point, always in between teaching kids in music school to play in woodwind orchestras and teaching jazz. I tend to sound boring sometimes 🙂

I also note you like the MkVII so much you’ve taken to sleeping with it!

Ha, this is to have a shield for my pyjama I haven't changed since the last lockdown.

Hi @guidocreo Thanks for posting. I didn’t think this was up to your usual standard. I thought you weren’t comfortable with the song form. I’m sure if you were to spend a little time to learn the melody, maybe sing the words to internalise it you would be much more comfortable. Look forward to hearing another take. Nice bari by the way. Quick and dirty, one shot one take on bari

AL is a tough master, and great host. He says what he hears, and that's good. I wanted to point out a nice thing you did at around the 2:46 mark. You create a rhythmic figure that is a "mini structure". (Fabrizio calls them cells.) You took one note that worked with the various chords swirling around, and using a rhythmic of two short and one long note, repeated it three times with a different end note each time. This is like a nugget of gold in jazz improv! All art is form, and jazz is especially good with small internal forms like this. As it happens, @fabriziodalisera just posted a video (in Italiano!) about this:

Al thanks for your esteem; you are right, mine is, in fact, a quick and dirty take sight reading the score.

I'm very busy in this days and very tired at night to play.

Randy, I really appreciate Al's comments: Al really listened to my take and he's right.
You did the same and you pointed out a nice thing to me: you know I'm very naive and my way to play is "close the eyes and blow".

Fabrizio is a good player and a good communicator, it is always interesting to listen to him.

@nigeld Thanks for posting. Tone is coming along nicely. Gentle approach to the tune. I feel you sounded a little nervous while recording. If this happens with me even in just a part of the take I just delete, front up and start again, it’s only a few minutes after all. You need to make the melody your own with a little embellishment. My own fault is on times to go overboard and forget the old axiom less is more. The impro fitted your approach to the tune and you sounded as if you knew exactly where you were In the structure. Nice job Regards Al.

Thanks AL, you're doing a great job hosting this month. Art has played and recorded with a few people, Freddy Hubbard, Nat Adderly, Benny Golson, James Moody, Eddie Harris, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Bobby Shew, Hal Crook and Richie Cole as well as releasing three albums as leader. For my part, I resisted active soloing here and stuck to an embellished melody.

By the way, Art and I discussed the ABAC thing. He said, "There is no B!" I thought about it, because I kept playing the wrong second ending melody. The harmony is similar, but the melody at the end is lower, not higher as I'd expected. I've seen the chart written as A section and coda, which is effectively a second ending. Long story short, I think it's easier to understand the tune as the C section being a second ending.

Hi @Mark Hancock I was wondering if you were going to appear this month as I always enjoy your takes. I didn’t recognise the surroundings although your sound was well captured as usual. Not sure if it was the tune or your posture but you didn’t look your relaxed self. Was it because you were standing or a bit of both. It’s not an easy structure but the slightly quicker tempo makes melody embellishment a little more tricky. I like the sound you get with those SYOS mouthpieces I might be tempted but I’m managing to keep GAS under control. Hopefully you’ll get another in before the end of this short month! Thanks for the feedback AL! I'm in the same little booth as usual, but I found I get a slightly better recording sound if I stand and put the mic a bit closer. Plus I'm almost knee-deep in cushions to try and kill off the sound of the booth. The slight look of discomfort might be because I had a minor operation last week 😵
