I have decided I want to learn/play Soul and Blues, a bit of a cop out as my speed is not great yet

Can anyone recommend some books with playalong CD, with and without the sax part, so I can hear it and play with the backing

The only ones I have seen are Guest Spot but don't know if they are any good

Thanks

Smiffy,

Here are some suggestions:

Rock 'n' Roll Saxophone - John Laughter
Contemporary Saxophone - John Laugher
Great books with CCs or CDs. Easy to work with. Also recommended listening. Important.

Blues Sax Masters - Dennis Taykor
Covers most of the R&B tenorists from 50's. Taylor is playing in the same style as the masters. I think you must listen to every player as well. Also good reading. CD and charts.

Rock 'n Roll Saxophone -Steve Douglas.
A very nice VHS with a booklet. This video helped me a lot when it came 1988. I got a complete picture how Rocksax worked.

Rock Sax Masterclass - Andrew Clark.
From Saxophone Journal. With CD and charts. I'm doing a translation to Swedish, but I guess you are not helped!

Tips and Tecnique for two saxes - Sax Gordon & Andrew Clark.
Gordon and Andrew in collaboration. From Saxophone Journal. CD and charts.

Learn to Play Rhythm 'n' Blues Saxophone - Mark "Deke" McGee
A toolbox for the Rocksaxplayer. Just tenor. CD. No charts. Deke is demonstrating and describing rocksax effects.

Rock sax Masterclass- Jorge Polannuer. CD + charts. From Saxophone Journal.

Saxsolos with mid acompaniment sop, alto, ten bari - John Paulson. Blues with a jazz approach. CD + charts. From Saxophone Journal.

Minor Blues Workout - John Paulson.
From Saxophone Journal. CD+charts.

Hot Rock Sax - Tim Price
Techniques, Licks and Effects. Great book.

Take The Lead Blues Brothers -
Charts and CD. Alto and tenor but not in the same book.

Take The Lead Rock 'n' Roll - Charts and CD. Alto and tenor but not in the same book.

You must order the issue of Saxophone Journal to get the CDs and Charts. The are not available in stores..... . But the are great.

This is what I can recall just now. I have them all.

Andrew Clark is coming (prel,) over here again in November for another Rocksax Workshop. Last time we did a Blues Sax Workout in A and E. One day( c 6 hours ). Next time we are also going to have a Blues jam and do some cooking as well. Goose! We are celebrating Martin Luther with goose in Scania. I think Martin Luther would have liked the combination Rocksax and Goose! So it's gonna be "Rockin' Goose" (Johnny & The Hurricanes)....... . I've to play like Johnny Paris!!!!

Come over and join us.

Thomas

Hi Thomas

That is some list 😱 🙂 I will look them up and pick out what I can digest

I have been reading a lot of Pete's stuff on R&R and Blues

"Come over and join us."

if only I could

Thanks for that

Any Soul stuff and other playalong suggestions please

Hi

I bought GuestSpot for Soul a few months ago as it's currently
on AMEB (Australian Music) syllabus.
GuestSpot makes a great product but I must say the arrangements in this case are a bit of a let down. Liked the look of
GuestSpot for Blues as mentioned earlier which would be a good start for soul anyway.

Check out audio examples here:

I'm currently working on a book/CD playalong with blues/R&B/ska tunes.

Hopefully ready before Christmas.

Hi Smithy

Another vote for Guest Spot Classic Blues, range of easy to hard tunes with sax track to see what you are meant to sound like.... mine is right next to me now....

Love playing these, hate excercises and other stuff (the bit that will improve my playing lol)!

cheers

Thanks Geoff, I'm going to order the blues as feedback is good on here

I think listening is important when it comes to learning tunes/styles. I buy a lot of records/CDs and try to get into the music that way. If you like soulsax King Curtis and Jr Walker are fine examples. But I think there are others; Groover Washington, David Newman ..... among others. And there is a lot of capable saxplayers who needs to be bought. All the stars are so incredably good so I often lay down my sax after hearing them. Sometimes I get more inspired by listening to a player that treats and uses a sax more in the way that is in reach for me.

I like Ben "King" Perkoff (Berlin). He is playing some of the old soulsongs: "When a man loves a woman, Soul Serenade, When Something is Wrong with My Baby, Hold on I'm Coming, A Change is gonna come" .... . Perkoff has a big tone in his saxes and he is also playing on sopranino (A Change is ...). He is playing on Selmer MkVI saxes and he is blowin' in a RPC tenor mpc. A couples of players I like use RPC. Pete Thomas, Sax Gordon, King Perkoff, Dough James and I also noticed that some guys here on forum is using RPC mpc. Maybe the secret for success??

Talking about soul: Is "A Change is Gonna Come" (Sam Cook) a R&B ballad or a soulsong? Soul is maybe more an expression of a way to play? To play soulsax good, longtone exercises are a must. BTW, it's always a must!

Sorry, I'm off the topic.

Thomas

No problem Thomas, no point just banging something out and not knowing how it should sound

I have often played from a sheet thinking it sounded right /ish only to find I was nothing like it in tone or much else

Here is a short sample (backing music for tenor Bb) of a soultune from a "Take The Lead" book. It's in D major. I prefer other keys to this song. If you had a CD player with key changer you can try other keys.

Thanks for that, Sounds like a Stax backing ?

I watched a program the other night about Stax, their alto player had his MP in up to the table 😱 I though he was gonna choke

Take the Lead make a good product in my experience.
Working my way through Take the Lead Jazz. Full backing with
interesting arrangements.
Check out Louis Jordan to see where it all began to take off.

Cheers

Take the lead - I have got a few and they work for me - and a good range of music and ability (some are way beyond me just yet!). I bought guest spot classic blues this weekend - maybe we can compare our experiences?

Big Thank you to someone out there allowing me to hear the Blues one

Now I'm worried as I will have to learn them 😱 But am looking forward to it 🙂

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
