i have taught using o'niell happily (though not exclusively) because the many things it doesnt cover in enough detail i am quite able to explain and demonstrate to the person standing next to me

Sounds like the perfect combination. 😉 My first teacher was from a classical background and my new teacher from a very traditional background and teachs me mostly by ear and transcribing, so I couldn't interest either of them in working with the O'Neill book. I'm sure your students love it. The musical selections in O'Neill are fantastic unlike the cheesy stuff in other beginners books!

I should have caveated my comments with the fact that I am primarily interested in blues, but studying with classical and jazz teachers. So there is stuff that I'm naturally going to have to pick up on my own from books and records.
