Hi,

It's my birthday soon - I'll be 25 in November.

I'm going to see The Zutons at Doncaster Dome on the last day of my 24th year, but that was a present I bought myself (I can't wait to see Abi Harding playing her funky horn!)

I think I'd like to ask for sax related presents this year, any suggestions? I have a Jupiter Sax, it's a beginner/intermediate model (769BL) and I was thinking of maybe a mouthpiece as I'm using the one that came with the sax at the moment. I'd also like a music stand, but is there one on the market that folds right down to a size I can stick in a cupboard or drawer?

Any ideas?

L
🙂

Happy coming birthday wishes :w00t:

IMHO a mouthpiece is a good thing to upgrade. Of course, which one to choose is another question!

Anyway, fwiw, one of our band members uses a music stand that folds right down to the size of a half used kitchen roll, my point being is they are out there. If no one comes up with a name/make/shop, I'll get the details for you at our next band meet.

25 eh... I can nearly remember that age 😉

well - happy coming birthday from me too. Mouthpieces are always great pressies (try before you buy mind). Just to add to your list - they also make sax stands that fold away n sit in the bell of your sax, along with a million other wonderful and money consuming inventions.

As for Zutons, I remember on their first album I wasn't too impressed with Abi's sax playing, but herd them live recently (through a wall, I was playing badminton at the time) and she sounded really good - she must have been practicing lots between albums, which is really good to see. She is also incredibly good looking and you don't get many good looking female sax players which is a bonus 🙂 (guys sure you know some - share the wealth) other than yourself of course (how sleazy am I! lol) Enjoy the gig, Oli

Hi,

From what I can see, there are very few famous female sax players out there per se...

would I be correct in that thought peeps?

Definately interested in those music stands guys, as long as the one Oli describes wouldn't damage the bell of my gorgeous Bryan (my sax is like a child to me - honestly!) I'd love the details if you wouldn't mind asking for me.

😛

PS - I played "Groovy Kind Of Love" last night all the way through without hitches...Several times!! If only Phil Collins could hear it...! :w00t:

Happy soon-come birthday Lisa. I have a music stand that folds to about the size of a half-baguette like you buy in Asda (other supermarkets are available). You need to have attained a zen-like state of inner calm to get it opened up without wanting to throw it across the room. It is very small and light, though. I'll see if it has any manufacturer's markings on it later.

Have fun with the Zutons, I like 'em. Mitch Benn, a writer of topical comedy songs, has a song called 'Nowadays Everyone Sounds Like Coldplay'. I think he maybe hasn't heard the Zutons yet.

Cheers, Bob

Lisa,

Being a recent starter last xmas brought me a variety of sax related gifts from wife, children, in-laws.

So - a stand for your Bryan ? (Rather than keep my sax in the case it sits on my desk)

A metronome?

I have a rather pleasant saxophone beer glass, various sax related t-shirts and wear my sax cuff-links to work .(They do pendants too.) There's always reading material - The Larry Teal book is one example.

And yes my music stand folds down small - but I can't remember the makers name.

I think Oliver was talking about a "sax" stand (saxrax or some such), not a music stand.

I posted a few links in your other thread and I'll find out what my pal uses when we meet up next week.

Oliver... lighting the cigar is the best part.

Candy Dulfer. Some of her recordings are none to shabby either.

Yes Candy Dulfer!!!!
There is a good Candy Dulfer DVD available,
I think its called 'LIVE IN AMSTERDAM'
Have you heard Lily was here or are you to young >.< ?

I grudgingly, sexistly (making these words up as I go along) have to admit that she has a great sound when she solo's!
I just don't get the kind of synthesized sound that comes over on some tracks.

Happy Birthday Lisa 😉 😉

Who's too young... me?!!!! with Dave Stewart

I agree I like it when she sticks to solo sax tracks. I also like hearing her play with her dad.

BTW: do you know who played the sax solo on T'pau's China?. There were several versions, but one version in particular had a spot on sax player.

wow, the very mention of female sax players and look at the response! tisk tisk. (says the one who started it :S) Yeh I was talking about the sax stands not music stands that fold up into the bell, though as roger points out they do v small music stands too.

PS: Ken without wishing too be rude - that new photo is a little intimidating!

Mouthpieces:
Lots of people will suggest Selmer S80 C* as a general all around mouthpiece, I personally really like them. Might be a good thing to try out.

I nice Meyer Jazz mp is good to have around too, but definitely try out as many as possible. I like the meyers, but you might be better off with an Otto link or something.

New Ligature:
Several good ones out their...I personally like the oligature and Francois Louis's ligature, forget what he calls it.

Mouthpiece and lig make a huge difference in your sound, moreso than your horn, in my opinion.

Yeah, they make collapsable music stands, some better than others.
Saxophone stands are nice to have too...

Not b-day gift...but last christmas I got numerous saxophone playing santa-clauses and coca-cola bears as gifts. They are sort of entertaining, I set them up in a little display, and when I push the buttons on them they play music. I'll probably have 20 of the things by the end of this year!

A nice case is also a good idea...not sure what the Jupiters come in. I'm not a fan of the soft cases, or the gig bags. A lot of horns get broken in them.

The saxophone repair kit from musicmedic.com is also a great resource to have around.

Thanks peeps! Excellent suggestions.

That's Bryan on the left - I have a sax stand that folds but most of the time it's on the stand. I have what I think is a soft case and only ever use it to transport the sax to lessons in the car so don't think I need a new case just yet.

It's a music stand I want, to put sheet music / book on whilst I play. Space is at a premium so it needs to fold small (quickly and easily-peesily) so I can stick it in a cupboard or whatever when I'm done.

Yes, I'd like Larry Teal's book and a metronome is a good idea, thanks. Never heard "Lily was Here" but will look it up now as it seems so popular! Was listeing to Jr Walker playing Soul Darling this morning... Lovely.

Any more ideas will be gratefully received!

The best birthday present that I can think of would be a saxophone lesson from the great Mark Ellis, son of the great John Ellis,M.B.E who runs the Doncaster Jazz Association, as you seemto live in the Doncaster area. You can E- Mail Mark at ELFUNKSTA @hot mail.com
Ken

Thanks, that's an interesting idea...

Actually I live in Northamptonshire which is a few hours drive from Doncaster. Spookily though, I'm moving to South Yorkshire hopefully by the end of the year (I think you must have psychic powers Ken!)
