Apologies -- I saw this come in and saved it, then forgot to get back to it.

Oh, I like that backing right away. Gotta admit, I didn't hear this on soprano in my head, but it actually works. Improv has the feel of a counter-melody, which I think works well on this tune. That backing really feels like it gives you a lot to build off of. What's the setting?

Thanks. I basically used your BiaB file, but swapped the piano for a Real Track vibraphone with the right tempo. It's interesting because if you listen to the vibes in isolation you can hear all sorts of mechanical and groaning noises but they mainly get covered up by the drums, bass and the saxophone over the top.

I also tried adding a guitar comping Real Track along with the vibes, but that just didn't sound good at all, even when I restricted it to the sections in 3/4.

I also changed the final bar from a hold (which I don't think BiaB does very well) to a 2 bar ending but that didn't sound good either.

Looking forward to hearing some other people do this tune as the month goes on.

PS I did try using one of the organ Real Tracks (influenced by Buck Hill's second recording) but the sound was a bit too dominant. The vibes one was more subtle and left more space.

Your soprano take wasn't what I was expecting (I'm a good way)

I've been chipping away at it... Surprisingly frustrating, and equally enjoyable. This week's lesson was postponed till Monday,before I lost my head with the Tenor, had a go on alto, that brings its own challenges, and bits I'm not happy with.

I've set a challenge, and will post. A recording, I've enjoyed listening to yours.

My teacher still isn't 100%, it was quiet at work so I've skived off and had a play on the tenor.

Hopefully a lesson next week, and see if we can iron out a few niggles before the end of the month.

I think that sound closer than you think, David. Only constructive feedback I'd send (and it's borrowed from a former teacher) is "think hot air, when you're blowing," (it's the way he explained, physically, what he was expecting when telling me to "support more"). Buck was a master of subtone, and that's the direction I always try to go when playing this.

Cheers, I've only been playing Tenor a few months, I'm learning voicing and air support have more influence than on the Alto.

Possibly. I find alto harder than tenor, but for breath support, you may be right. Keep hammering away, because you sound like you're on track!

I did drop it down an octave after the 2nd repeat as I've no high F#

It did work eventually using the Safari browser on my iPhone and then emailing the file to myself.

Download is working in Firefox, Safari, and Chrome -- tested all three from another machine. Working on both PC and Mac on my end. I'll do whatever is needed to share, but it's working on my end so I can't recreate the issue (so I can't fix it).

Yes, the only way I can get anything is to select copy link location and then paste it into the navigation bar but it only gives me a 2kB .SGU file

Understood -- that's the BIAB file, and that's what it gives me, too. The mixed down links should be working. The .SGU should be able to be opened in BIAB if you want to make changes. If you're not looking to make changes, the links at the top of the thread should work for the full backing.

No worries -- the modern web can be fickle to navigate, and slight adjustments on the server side give weekend hackers like me fits just trying to keep stuff accessible. I miss the simplicity of a 4-track cassette mixer. 😀

Had a lesson last week, specifically went through this during it, a bit of back to basics re embouchure, and Subtone technique... Take 2 on tenor feels a bit more relaxed.

Dave -- sounds good, very emotional feel. You can hear the work if you compare the first take with this one, much better support without losing experession. Kudos.
