BOTM 2013/05 'There Came You'

Hey guys this thread has gone a bit quiet. When are some of the regular posters going to put up something for May?

To take a break from scale playing for the Berklee online improv course I've just had a go at improvising over Chris' backing track for There Came You. Nothing clever, no improvising of chord changes, just simplistic noodling in G major really, and it sounds too uncomfortably like my other efforts for my liking but I really was trying to come up with something different, honest! Found it hard to get anything going but here it is anyway. Maybe it will spur some other contributors on?...

i will post a version before the end of the month, i got a busy schedule at the moment, gotta pop to Norway in the next few days then Sweden so it will have to be when i get back

I'm going to do a version, I'm just a bit snowed under with the Gary Burton Improv course. I thought that I couldn't improvise, but now I know it!! :shocked:

It's a very challenging chordal piece with little if any standard chord progression patterns - so lots of work needed on those changes!! >:)

I'm working on it when I get time, hope come up with something by the end of the month!

Not an easy one at all so well done with it Profusia :welldone

I might be a little biased, but that was one of your best recordings Davey. You sounded very much at ease all the way through this one. Sounds great

Cheers Chris.Only spent a few hours on the new horn and it feels,plays great.As normal with me I pressed record and just went for it.This was the 1 of the 3 takes that just flowed best.Agree the chord structure is very odd but very nice also.

i like this swinging ballad, cos it aint a regular 2-5-1 or predictable, 'meaty' indeed to impro on, i will post a version as soon as i can...
nice take on it Dave, the new sax sounds darker but warm with flowing key mechanisms, sounds like the keys and springs are smooth.

Any top Yamaha or Yanagisawa for me has the best build and ergonomics going for sure.These 2 brands give me the most even scale I've always found plus the best intonation.See how the 992 fairs tonight and tomorrow at gigs but it will be fun.

Just to wax a bit more lyrical on Yanagisawas. Not only do they sound fantastic in the hands of you experienced guys who know how to play so well (really enjoy listening to your stuff) but they have made my beginner journey so easy. So easy to play, fantastic tone and intonation and, on the tenor, keys that I can reach.

Love you guys work this month. really impressed with all the efforts. I`m working on just getting the changes under the fingers. . Theres no way for me to play a decent impro on this without 1st really letting this get under the skin and I`m a slow learner but it`s a good challange and I`m sure I`ll something before August LOL

There's something I dont understand in your notation: surely a small triangle (sorry dont have one on this keyboard) means major 7th and a circle with a diagonal line through it means half diminished i.e. C Eb Gb Bb so why are there 7s written after these two symbols? Isn't it complicating matters?

It probably is, but it's just a quirk of the notation side of BiaB. tbh though this is the first time I actually noticed it after you pointed it out..

I`ve posted my first trial of this months Ballad.

The reason I`ve posted early is I am putting this up as an example of how I am actually having to use the chart to work on my impro due to the complex nature of the changes and thought it would be of interest to those doing Gary Burtons course. This track is challenging me on a number of levels The 1st one is just trying to get something nice to play after the head. the second one is trying to really get the head nice and the 3rd one is How the hang to get the lot to sound sexy and sultry as I really think this tune is perfect played by Zoot.
So what you have here is an example of me hopefully moving towards something OK but I`m having to rely on the chord symbols to begin with this month rather than busk it simply as the tunes format is so different. ( It`s slowly getting to be more fun though)LOL

Clive, while I know where you're coming from. I have to say that was pretty good for a trial run, the head was nice and 'Smokey', while the improv was all your own and sounded good. There are times when first thought is best thought even if you are reading a chord chart. This was never going to be easy to solo over, like you said it has an odd form. Big

from me anyway as I enjoyed that..

Universal notation of chord symbols seems like a pipe-dream. I find it confusing too. Along with many other redundant or alternate chord symbols used in music charts.
Seems like we have to learn at least 2 or 3 different ways of writing a diminished or major7 chord 😉

This ballad is beautiful but a little beast to get under the fingers. My setbacks so far have been mostly a lack of time and talent, but I will post soon!!! 😀
