BB codes

What are bbcodes?

I'm glad you asked. They are generally used to add formatting to the text in your messages. They can be applied by typing in the code or simply clicking the appropriate icon above the text editor (see below)

Each bbcode has an opening tag, e.g. [bbcodetag] and a closing tag e.g. [/bbcodetag] (same but always starts with a forward slash)

There are two main ways to use bbcode:

  • You can type in the two tags and include your text to be formatted between them
  • Click on the corresponding icon above the text editor which automatically inserts the tags with a cursor between them ready to type. Alternatively first highlight the text then click on the icon which will insert the tags around the selected text.

The set of bbcode icons can be toggled on or off by clicking on the [ ] icon in the text tooolbar, which causes them to be greyed out. Click on the [ ] to show them again.

Some slghtly different bbcode examples:

  • Some tags, e.g.the hr (horizontal rule) tags, do not require any text.
  • "spoiler" will prompt you for a title first. If left blank this will default to "Read more..."
  • The table icon will prompt you to choose the number of rows and columns for your table, once inserted the cursor will be in the first row/column
  • To make a list, type each list item on a new line, select all of them and then click on icon for ordered (numbered) list or unordered (bullet point) list
  • bbcode for media embeds (Youtube, Soundcloud etc.) is now automatic: all you need do is copy and paste the URL into the message.
  • Images can be either uploaded and embedded via the image bbcode icon, or just dragged and dropped into the message.

The best way to learn the full capabilities is to just try them out, you can use our test forum for this.
