Good question.

Seems Ronnie Scott's is now run by accountants (as it seems is most of London - reported in the paper today states average salary of London accountants at 87K)... and they keep the 'undesirables' out by putting the price through the roof. Bit tough on students, really. Ditto house prices, rent and football tickets.

The place still sells out. Different clientele huh?

During my lengthy period of going to rock etc gigs, I always preferred the smaller venues, and wasn't really interested in the big, expensive gigs. The few times I went to really big gigs, I didn't enjoy it (Led Zep and Pink Floyd spring to mind). Along the same lines, I prefer to support smaller, local jazz clubs - ok, you may not get to see someone as renowned as Sanborn, but you can still get to see some plenty good musicians e.g. I've seen Simon Spillett a few times, and other equally good, if not famous, players such as Tommaso Starace (excellent alto player), Karen Sharp (lovely tenorist) etc. Even 'local' musicians who maybe have day-jobs too can be well worth a listen, and all these for usually well under a tenner.

These gigs may not be such an 'event' as something like Sanborn at Ronnie's, but if your expectations are not as high at a local club gig you can be blown away by something unexpectedly brilliant.

On the plus side, you could go and see Sanborn 8 times at 75 quid and still only spend as much as seeing Barbra Streisand once 😉

technically the guy is a genius, but tech isn't everything.. you need soul..

I saw Karen Sharp at the Lowry when she was touring with Humphry Lyttelton's band. Humph must have been in his seventies (at least!) at the time and the rest of his band were about the same... And then there was Karen!

The Barbican's an even worse venue for latin, rock, blues, country etc etc!! I've seen many a good band die on stage, playing in that soulless aircraft hanger...

From what I hear, touring is now where the money is, as opposed to a few years back when the money was made from record sales which touring helped to promote. I guess downloading has something to do with this? I know the recent gigs by the reformed Genesis were 75 quid in, but how that stacks up in terms of 75 for DS at Ronnies.... well, they're playing to thousands rather than 150, they don't have a record to promote - from what I hear it's a 'greatest hits' kind of show (or as we oldsters like to refer to it, 'cabaret') so, yes, they're obviously coining it.

I pays for my CD's. I can obtain copies but prefer to support the artist. Where will the ticket sales and income for the drinks go.....not the artist thats for sure.

more itimacy - at ronnies you dont feel like your in a crowd and even sat at the back/sides - you can see every minute detail - from finger movements to embouchure shape, and the sound sytem in there is fantastic.
