Jazz Who will be the first to transcribe this Chris Potter piece challenge?

Came across this piece and want to transcribe it so I can practice it. I find it relaxing to sit and transcribe a piece on the piano. This one is a challenge! I am crazy busy, sold my piano and am waiting for the Roland I want to upgrade to to go on sale. Any one have a subscription to one of those AI transcription sites?

I will post on the JBL Band Box Solo I am using. I can strip any special request song on the fly with the thing! There is a slight delay and a few quirks I will outline when I post in detail. Fits on my tray with my mixer, I run my iPad mini or iPhone into it and then to the mixer.

I also have found some AI sites that will convert songs to different genre! 🤯 I used to spend so much time converting tunes to Bolly style. No longer. You want a Klezmer or country, Bolly version of a song or tune done!

This stuff gets you the gigs and the pay.

Well… it was worth a shot. Tried out Songscription AI for a lead sheet. Wasn’t very close. Had it isolated to give me a tenor lead sheet.

Tried wind2notes. They offer a free 20 second demo transcription.

Sent a YouTube link to a tune we're playing next month with a tricky modulating interlude. Much simpler than a Potter cadenza.

Songscription was a fail. 🙁
There's a way to buy 50 songs without a monthly subscription and the 30 day time limit. It's $31.99. Apparently you purchase a gift card to make that happen.

I won't need it enough to warranty a subscription and probably wouldn't use all 50 in a year's time but if it saves me an hour on learning something new/tricky it would be worth the $

Glad I didn't pony up for the 50 songs. Would have been worth it if it worked but it's just not ready yet.

Has anyone tried wind2notes? I don't have high hopes but given the rapid pace of AI development I'm confident that something will work eventually.

Best way to transcribe is using your ears, directly from the recording to your horn. Granted, that cadenza will be a real challenge. Maybe use a slow down program.

Excellent question. One of the features is transcribing from a YouTube link.

When I use Moises for backing tracks (which is actually pretty good) it won’t work with just a YouTube link.
You need a non-protected mp3 or other audio file.

To be honest I’m afraid to know the real answer 😀 but if humans can transcribe music for their personal use without copyright issues I’d imagine this would be no different.

The other thing is that my trumpet player wants the notes too.

Even if I manage to memorize it by ear in short order writing it out would take an excruciating amount of time.

Yeah, I wasn't talking about writing it out (I realize that's the technical definition of 'transcribe'). I'm just talking about being able to play it, which is the goal, right? I wouldn't spend the time writing it down, once I had it on the horn. Assuming I could get it on my horn; not sure I could or would try to get the whole thing. Maybe a few bits of it, just for fun. It's an amazing cadenza.

I disagree about not writing transcriptions down. Yes, one goal is to be able to play it. But my main goal is to understand it and apply it to my own solos. It's really difficult to go back and analyze something or see patterns if you never write them down. What's the chord progression? How do the lines relate to it? Also, many transcriptions can be very long and complex. Those would take forever to memorize as I go, versus writing down and working out later over the course of a few weeks. Finally, if I don't play something often, a year from now, it will disappear from my memory, and all that hard work goes right down the drain. If I wrote it down to begin with, I can go back and relearn it anytime.

If we're talking about simple solos or melodies, sure, just learn it by ear and be done with it. But a 10 minute Brecker solo with thousands of notes, I'm gonna write that down rather than torture myself.

You make a good point. And yeah, I do write some things down. Almost the opposite of what you said in the quote above, though. When I come up with a ii-V-I phrase, or other licks that I like, I'll tend to write them down to see how well they fit in 2 or 4 bars, etc. and so I don't forget them. I've also written out heads to a tune, both to remember them and as you say, to analyze what's happening harmonically.

However, I probably wouldn't transcribe an entire 10-minute Brecker solo. Most of what I do with something like that is to pick out 2 or 4-bar phrases that I like and experiment with them. And then maybe write those out. So, I'm not saying I never write anything out.
