Hi all.

Wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the beginners section but here we go...

Could anyone tell me what ( if any) the advantages are, for a newbie, of upgrading my mouth pice from the one which was supplied with my sax (A.Carmichael / Selmer Prelude Alto) to a Yam 4C (i.e. easier to play, better tone etc).

I have had a look at may posts in this forum but I am unable to find the answer.

Any points of view are welcome.

Probably nicer to play, nicer response, nicer tone, lots of all round niceness for a nice price.

having said that it might be better to listen to someone with more experience of the mouthpiece that comes with the prelude.

I have played standard mouthpiece supplied with saxes. They can play reasonably well and are ok for an immediate beginner, but if you have a blow on a better quality mp you will automatically feel the difference.

You could consider upgrading to a better quality mouthpiece or like a Selmer or Otto Link. These are recommended by most teachers . I have an Otto Link and its nice.

One suggestion - personally I'd either buy cheap, try before you buy or get it on "sale or return". A piece that suits one person (or even a lot of people) might not suit you...

...and some of them are quite expensive! 😱

Yup - find a shop where you can try some out. Never, ever, buy one "on spec" sometimes cheapies work better than expensive ones. You need to hear it blow, and you need an hour or so with a boxfull to find the right one.

(OH man, this is the start of a lifetime project, right there)

But, good on you for being at the stage where you want to find out. 🙂 The advantages are immense. You can transform your (and your listeners) enjoyment. Do it.

Defiantly try some before you buy if possible. I had a alto Otto Link 7 ebonite. It was just so hard to play, as a beginner it ruined everything. Its a great mp but not in my opinion for for someone who has just started, so it had to go.

Appreciate the advice guys.

Just rang my local music shop and they have several in stock, including the 4C.

Looks like I'll be shoping at the weekend. 🙂

I have just ordered a new MPC. It's a Premier Hite made by Babbitts - the same people that make Otto Links and Meyers amongst others. It was recommended by my teacher as a good, less expensive model 😉 .

Hi PaulyT.

Thanks for the offer but I like the idea of 'try before you buy'. The music shop sells a few different flavours so I'm sure they will have one that suites.

Sounds like you have been waiting a while.

Would you like the details of the place I bought mine from or would you like to wait and see if it actually arrives?

I'm looking for a new mouthpiece too -I've read the reviews & like the sound of this one. I'd appreciate the details, if you'd be so kind.

Cheers
Sharron 🙂

Hi Sharron,
I bought it from "Bandroom 1" who are, appropriately enough, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I came across them on Ebay. This is the item number of the MPC I bought - there are still a number of them available at this sort of price (exchange rates vary!)

David Hite Alto Sax - Premier Saxophone Mouthpiece Item number: 190158048205

I'm still waiting for mine to arrive. They emailed me to say they'd sent it so now it's down to the postie! 😉
Hope this helps,
All the Best,
PaulyT
