Cafe collaborations To big a dream

I gave a link to that earlier and offered to pay lol
7 pages? lol

Look. You asked a a reasonable question and have a pile of feedback. IMHO the thing to do is, quietly, go through the thread and write down each speed bump, have a think and a Google on how to overcome them... And if you see daylight, maybe try again with a consolidated plan?

As always @eb424 ... I like your enthusiasm and ideas. We need more of this in the predictable and stiff saxophone world. Too many clever and mainstream saxplayers are hiding beind a note stand in a band. We need more players to take a steep out in the front. London and England seems to be a too small and narrow for you? Have you ever consider to emigrate?😉

I have done many "hopeless" projects through the years. Organized "Rock & Roll Saxophone", workshops in a land without this tradition, local Rock & Blues project for everyone, local RockSax meetings with just a few honkers around, Blues and Rock Jam in the woodshed ..... . Lots of fun.

I have found out that if we were 2-4 guys to run the projects it would probably be a little bit easier to carry out. It's too much for one person. Too many compromises.

Check the "Christmas classic......Fairytale of" ... idea. It's a great idea but you have to ask yourself many questions .... . I hope you will get some positive feedback from yourself and you "open/start". After that you need some important persons . You already have your nephew .. but you need more folks to test/check your ideas with. Music, economy, what to do with the money you need during the project, play along music, start date of the project and close date ..... a good project name. ?????

Good luck!

I Know 7 pages; and at the end of it I still don't know who would theoretically do it if it went ahead..lol. Good advice re looking back through I have started to look at permission to overdub the video. I'll contact @nigeld to see about sharing the dots.

Hey thanks as usual @thomsax your contribution has put some enthusiasm back..I'm trying to look at it in 3 parts. It's not for radio or anything large like that. I'm looking at part 1 as a very early sotm botm for next December as a starting point. It is hard. I appreciate all the help and advice here but it is so difficult trying to get people to commit if it goes ahead. I need to know the initial goal of getting the song together is achievable as a starting point. Keep it simple would people be interested if it goes ahead..wow thats the hard bit. Really need 4 people at least. Worse case scenario is the songs done and next Decs song of the month is done early..No one dies..Also it would be good if each persons part was videod so as there is some footage to splice into the vid if I can get permission to use it. I realise some people may not want to that bit would be nice but isn't a given, a recordings fine..

Both of these are crucial before even starting. But probably the most important is the video permission.
Happy new year @Pete Thomas. I genuinely think the permission will be easier to get than the enthusiasm and commitment lol. Ive started to look into it..The singer Shane has passed, Kirsty has gone, the director of the video has died, Stiff records are no more. I have reached out to the late Shane Mcgowans wife re advice, reached out to the Irish folk singer who performed the song at Shanes funeral re contacts. I will find out who holds the rights and contact them. I have started with the pogues all I can do is try. Worse case scenario if the song is done and consent is not given is that the cafe has a few contributors for next Decembers sotm early.

I’d be amazed if this were granted. I know some haven’t heard the song but it’s always been a pretty big one in the UK.

Without a (known) name (like Kenny G) asking, I can’t see it happening - if people can’t get royalties then they like exposure.

As for song choice - even though I don’t see the appeal to the general public of a load of sax players (no singer) - surely I Wish It Could Be Xmas Every Day is a better instrumental choice as it has the sax section backing already.

As for relations in TV etc - are you positive that your nephew is really up for work / effort for no money? (Heard this one before and nothing came of it).

You can only ask - but I think it makes it less likely.

And… everyone wants a back story and a good cry these days.

here but it is so difficult trying to get people to commit if it goes ahead.
My gut feeling is that the song itself is not an appealing one for anybody to actually learn and play as an instrumental. I can see how it would work the way you do it as karaoke in a care home but that’s it. I would not want to do it as a saxophone instrumental, I have to have faith in what I do and I just don’t get it as a saxophone track, especially as a collaborative one. I’m telling you now out of wanting to be up front and honest.

You may be able to convince me otherwise with a demo of the track, video and a sound business plan of the whole project.

Also it would be good if each persons part was videod so as there is some footage to splice into the vid
Another gut feeling is splicing peoples amateur iPhone video into a very professionally shot promo will not work very well, but if your nephew can do it convincingly I’ll happily eat my hat.

You are wasting your time trying to contact singers, only the rights holder can give permission to you, and the first station to stop at would probably be Pogue Mahone Records or whoever is now the label. They will then get clearances from all artists, actors and possibly unions if applicable - once they know what usage you want.

The other way is to do it without permission.
I’d be a
Me too.

Hi

Happy new year @Pete Effamy

I think people are looking at this to big. I am trying to "tone" it down it into bite size chunks. Do some good and have some fun 🙂

I am not sure how much royalties would come from you tube.,or the video on its own.

My project may raise £1000 for a well known charity, a drop in the ocean to the pogues royalties. The video on line as with the video of the song at Shanes funeral can be viewed at anytime though I guess this may be seen as commercial. I have reached out to Shanes widow who does a lot for charity. It could also be seen as free advertising possibly.

I had intended (if it happened) at only using snippets of the video ( I will have to contact Matt Damon too) interspursed with a video of the participants recording the song. It was said earlier that seperate recordings may be difficult. I thought that those (if I can recruit anyone) who wanted to do it could meet at a central area and record followed by a social pint and have some lunch and a beer (or wine @Jeanette) =s solve a problem and have some social time minimal cost..TBD

Up to this point if consent for the video can't be gotten we have had a nice meal, put a face to people on the forum, and started working towards a blinding SOTM for next December. If I get responses from those I have contacted re consent or found out more about royalties Game On.

I have only spoken briefly to one nephew who said it could be done and he would do it. I wouldn't want to put to much on him he is really busy. I also know someone else who is excellent at videos. I had a bit of a problem wwith the key in sweet caroline video I use at "fun raisers" I had the song in the right key from K.V. so she deleted the song from the karaoke video, and replaced for right key lined up with the words 10 mins. I wouldn't expect anyone to give much for free...But if many give a little the maths are the same.

Also I do appreciate all the help and advice here so thanks and a happy new year

How do you propose to get royalties from YouTube
or the video on its own.
what does this mean?
I think people are looking at this to big.
You originally proposed it as big, a release with radio play. Hence i advised on that basis.

Granted the project is now smaller, video only, however

My project may raise £1000 for a well known charity,

proposed profit of £1000 funds raised from a YouTube video as above is very big and ambitious IMO.

I really appreciate your honesty re the song choice. The only demo I have is my pitiful effort here not blended just played over the backing track. Difference is I'm trying to look at it as how a bit of fun could make a few bob for a good cause. We are 2 different worlds Pete youre a pro player who has reached some phenemenol goals with a fantastic career god im jeleous, youve earnt it. I'm a little fat bloke who tho is commited to beibg the best I can be will only ever be of a standard to have some fun out if it. Ive found a way to play in front of people, raise a few quid for charity, whilst still learning. Its all I can do.. I completely understand that you and many don't see it as a sax song. It's not but stirs up passion an emotion once a year ( note to self.. hmmmm leave it Ed). I was hoping that this coupled with the vid ( if achievable) would promote that passion, and also show the fun that can be had with a sax..

I love the idea of a few/ lot of sax amateurs having a go at recording a song for charity.

So let's take a step back and start at the beginning with a blank sheet of paper. If we wanted to do this, do any of our pro/semipro members with much wider experience want to help lead on this idea?

Assume no decisions made about the tune, how, who and when.

I realllly hope im not comming accross as challenging or defensive. Also apologise for the length of the thread. I really do appreciate all the help support advice and time given. It was just an idea in my head at the outset but the thread has at least given me some direction and roadblocks to look at.

I really need to look at you tube donations. I thought that buying a coffee would cover it.

I mentioned royalties from You Tube as I wasn't sure if they would be given everytime the video was viewed.

I was hoping that greatest hits might promote it. Maybe a link on their website to promote traffic. If I can get consent.

If I can get consent and traffic 1000 views and 1000 coffees bought should generate £1000 maybe less views coffees expensive.....lol.

I realise the plan has changed a bit but thats the benefit of all the advice here. I don't want to waste anyones time its nyd so really appreciate it all..

Excellent, i only chose that one because of its passion..

It's too hard for me to play with others on-line. My internet connection is not stabile/fast enough. And that's fine because I try to live an "off-line" life! The computer I use right now, is more or less just for CS, is my only on-line thing.

Maybe I can add some Scanish advent coziness as well? Some rock and blues Jul (Christmas) music, glögg and gingercakes, té or coffee + some other cakes. We are in Sweden so no alcohol. I decorate the woodshed as well.

If this turns out well I will split the money that is coming in to Ed and CS (payment & donation). A small band + 2-3 horns. I think it's possible to have c 15 persons (audience) in the house. It's a small house c 32 square meter. Without a band I can get c 20 persons into the shed. After the 3-4 latest years I have learned to reserve myself for sudden and unexpected events. My brother in law passed awy in mid august and two weeks later my old mother passed away. You never know what .... .

My thoughts so far.

  • 1st Advent 29/11, 2nd Advent 6/12, 3rd Advent 13/12.
  • 4rd Advent 20/12 a small film/video ready.
  • Old American R&B, blues/rock + modern Swedish jul songs, c 10 songs.
  • Same songlist on all days and then we cut the best recordings to a video.
  • I use to pay royalities for the music, around 300 per time.
  • Same backing band but horns may change.

Now I have something to do and look forward to.
