Big challenge for your ears: RAP!!! OK just give a listen and I think you'll find a much stronger relation to jazz than you imagine. The woman singing/rapping is very talented and the lyrics are not what you may imagine either. Sax comes in at 1:07. The challenge is to NOT dominate the piano and fit in with everything else that's going on (mood/feel, flow, lyrics, changes, etc.). First is with sax 2nd is without.

Kudos for using the right format! You're got a great feel for this one and laid down a wonderfully lively (spiky?) track that embodies the mood and punchy character of this piece. IMHO would have been better at the original tempo (part of the challenge?) as the vocals didn't sound real at that speed. Obviously you needed that tempo for what you were wanting to do, yet it's also a good challenge to see what we can do with something that doesn't fit exactly what we want. A part of this challenge, especially when we are just part of the backing or have a limited solo, is to make the music (as it is) sound the best that it can rather than making ourselves sound best.

Overall the enjoyment of your playing tops everything else. Sounding so fine.

The tempo thing wasn't deliberate.. I hadn't preset the tempo in the DAW, which then boosted it to 120 bpm. By the time I had wrestled with the DAW to actually get it to record and to expunge the outtakes I had stopped listening to the vocals so missed the clue to my mistake. I actually thought about slowing it down just to make the playing easier (face to palm)

Yes I get the idea of being sparing in what I play... this will take time
