Rock & Pop The Other Sax #4

Wow, what a difference! In both of these you are part of the music and adding to it. I do prefer the first one for its simplicity yet hear your joy in the second one where in the second half you're flying free, like a weight has been lifted from you. There are melodic ideas and a "feel" that fits with the music. This exercise isn't about technical aspects, yet tuning and intonation on the high notes need attention.

This was such a joy for me to hear. I'm truly sorry that you won't be around for a little while, especially since you're (so far) the only player who has taken up this challenge. Oh well, there will be one a day waiting for you until somebody says STOP POSTING THESE!

Yeah, sorry. I've got some breathing problems today (that's my excuse anyway) so some of the notes are a bit wobbly. But thanks.

Man, nothing to apologize about. The important important aspects of playing were all there. The exercise is about fitting in with these styles in a way that works. You've got it! Also good that Ivan has now posted as well and seems to have also "got it".

Here is my interpretation........recorded on my phone, so apologies for the sound. Must get some proper recording software this year......(but then won't have any excuses to say it's the mix!)

Lovley melodic thinking and nice long tones. Definitely a good fit for the mood. Sounds like you have it playing live and are recording both the backing and your playing with a microphone. Would be better if you could put into a program like Audacity and then mix your track. Well, that's being picky and not really what the exercise is about...just kind of a too bad as otherwise it's a "keeper".

Cheers for your feedback Wade. I'm playing the backing through my hi-fi speakers and playing the sax in the room. Have to place phone near the speakers and stand quite a way away (10 foot) from the phone. My living room is 12 foot high, wooden floor, loads of windows and sparsely furnished........not really optimal for recording, but hopefully you can get an idea of my playing. Would be much better if the sax were not so prominent, but something is better than nothing and more importantly, I enjoyed playing it!!. Anyway, sometime this year I will set up a recording area, but at the moment, wife, kids, work and domestic duties take precedence! Am happy to get a chance to play / practise! Thanks for your playbacks and also for the great amount of possibilities provided by wikiloops - what a great resource / site.

Mwah, this is the least interesting backing track I've listened too so far in 'The Other Sax" series. I find it highly repetitive and in general bland. It's .like wallpaper and it doesn't inspire me at all. Just my taste, I guess.

@Wade Cornell: Rather than creating a separate thread for each of your Wikliloops selections, perhaps it would be better (with the help of mods) to bundle these under one 'Recordings/Wikiloops' thread. One advantage of this is that other members could also propose Wikiloop backing tracks. It would be more of a collaborative effort.

But wouldn’t the initial wikiloop backing track posts just get lost and buried though, Mike? At least with a separate thread, people can easily find the OP backing track for a recording.
I haven’t listened to this one yet, I will do now.

I agree with Alice separate threads are better. What we may do is create a subforum. I've been thinking about it but wanted to see how popular they were first.

Will discuss with the others

I'm happy with whatever the moderators think works best. It's hard for me to judge the level of interest, although there seems to be a good number of listeners. Having a an extended library of good quality backing tracks could be a good resource. Representing different genera also presents a larger resource base for players to experience and learn from.

Wish I could say that every track will suit everyone's taste, but that's just not possible. There will be popular types of music like rap, reggae, house and DJ music, etc. If there's lots to choose from, then the styles not liked can certainly be ignored. The point is, it's not a steady diet of just one style and gives the players here an opportunity to see how far they can adapt and stretch their hearing and playing abilities.

It's kind of like going to the gym. If you just do sit-ups you may have an impressive 6 pack to show off. If you do a variety of exercises then your whole body will be fit.

Sorry Mike. The tracks being presented can be guaranteed to NOT be to everyone's taste. Yet they give a variety of different styles and challenges. This particular one could be taken as a melodic challenge. It is (as you say) somewhat bland and repetitive, but certainly has a distinctive flavor. While it's possible to just join the backing playing chord tones the real challenge is to lay down a melodic line that sings over the top and gives expression to the mood that has been created. It requires a "singer". For players who have not exercised playing melodically it could be a very difficult exercise. For melodic players it's likely to be easy.

Picking and choosing the ones you like is fine. Taking on tracks that you don't have an affinity for may be even better as it challenges and stretches you to make it work. Your choice.

Hope you can get it fixed.
I had been I using a demo version of Mixpad, which seemed quite intuitive but kept crashing and then held my recording hostage by asking for spondoolics before it would let me export as an mp3. Well the Australian economy isn't going to be boosted by my seventy quid if that's how they treat me

Now learning the rudiments of Ableton Live.... this may take some time
