The Deed is Done

For those of you who saw my ring the doorbell post and read my hemming and hawing about a tenor sax - well I've decided to get a tenor as well. I'll have both the alto and tenor on overlapping hire to compare them and send one back and keep t'other. That's the plan anyway. I only hope that I don't really enjoy both as the budget won't stretch to buying 2.

I was listening to Stan Getz yesterday and love that sound so much, I thought it was worth a go at playing and if I don't get on with it at least I've had a try. Obviously don't expect to sound like Stan 😉

Well done Sharon, I hope you really enjoy the tenor. I was listening to theJazz last night, and a tune came on which had a tenor on it with a really beautiful rich, lush tone. It was a ballad, and it was Dexter Gordon playing it and he sounded really relaxed. That's my kind of tenor-ing, nothing too fast or in-yer-face. Keep an ear out for it, it made me come over all unnecessary and swoonsome. Then I got woken up by some Joe Lovano!

Although my horn of choice is the alto, I can totally understand why people say the tenor is the most versatile. Have fun.

Cheers, Bob

Thanks Bob. I must admit I don't know a whole lot about who I should listen to - but like you, I do like that style. If I think about it, it was that sort of sound which always made me want to give it a try.

I've been playing "Summertime" (it's far easier than I thought) on the Alto and whilst I enjoy it, it's not quite there for me. I don't really listen to much Jazz - at least I listen to blues etc. but I can't get to grips with that "busy" jazz - too many notes! I am making an effort to educate myself though.

Sharon,
Take care with the Getz fixation, his Bosa Nova period fascinates me. Was playing Ipanema in the Community Centre and one of my fellow residents came up and remarked, "You sounded just like Astrid and Stan then. Gilberto playing tenor and Getz singing."
Have I been insulted? :erm:
Bill.

good for you sharon hope you have fun..

on ipanema..why are all the fake books, baqcking tracks and every band up and down the counrty who play the thing in F..when the getz version is in a much nicer sounding key of Db? always wondered why that is..

LOL Bill that wasn't an insult - that's a backwards compliment.

That Ipanema is a real favourite in our house the kids beg me to put it on in the car all the time and we all try and sing and all sound like Getz.

In the end I went for the Trevor James Classic because I've got the alto and it seems fine (not that I would know a bad one - that's the trouble when you're new).

Also I can hire it in tandem with the alto to compare. I'll probably end up buying whichever I like best as the rental comes off the final price. It would be hard to justify hiring two saxes and then paying the full price for a totally different third! It's coming on Monday and I can't wait.

Best fun to be had with your clothes on - wish I had taken the plunge years ago. I might have been brilliant by now.

How right you are, wait till you get your first baritone, plays even better with your clothes off...apparently!

I should be brilliant by now then............uhmm!

Simon

Yeah good point Derek... sounds way better in Db. Probably in F due to most bands can't handle Db or the sax players refuse to play in flat keys...
