Soprano vs Tenor

I recently went down the route of looking for a Tenor, which I've never played before and then thought that since I travel over to Greece quite a bit the soprano (never played before would be easier to carry on the plane (not sure if this is a correct assumption?).

Anyway as I'm at an intermediate level, my ambition is to play in a little jazz quartet with a little solo spot.

Right now I play in a beginners jazz band with my alto and also a jazz quartet which has both tenors and sopranos and baritones.

The other advantage of the soprano is less noise practising.

My question is am I on the right track and do you think these are valid considerations, have others been down this route and what did they decide and why.

Not necessarily.
Although I go for a warm and mellow sound on soprano my other half says she can hear it more clearly outside and suggests its louder.
Actually its definately not the case that its louder but the frequencies obviously carry.

Now I would personally stick with alto in a shaped case as hand luggage if the plane trips are a regular concern. Theres not much difference in size from a soprano case then unless you go for a curvey sop.
I got away with tenor as hand luggage before 9-11 but I don't think you can be confident with any of them at the moment, you'd have to check prior to your trips.

Soprano brings its own tuning issues but you probably know that.

Hmm, apart from the issues of taking one on a plane, I'd say definitely go for tenor. I love playing both tenor and soprano, although alto is really my main horn, and the jump from alto to tenor is easier than from alto to soprano imho. Plus of course the tenor is the more versatile horn, but then again the soprano does have a character of its own.

Sop much smaller than tenor. You'd have to put the tenor in the hold.

Baggage handler 1: " I bet you I can wreck this sax and not leave a mark on the case."

...

But if your concern is to keep up your chops, then why not take your alto to Greece?

Thanks guys and Sparrow - I thought it might be too big as hand luggage bit it seems Saxlicker states not much difference in case size.

I flew to Zakinthos for my holiday and took my tenor on the plane in a Hiscox pro case - it went on as hand luggage there and back.

I just had it slung over my shoulder. No one questioned me about its size - the cabin crew asked what it was but that was it.

I'm afraid its sleezyjet to Crete and sometimes Athens and then Adriatic Airlines to Chania (Crete) in the off peak.

Now back on the Tenor search again me thinks!

I have a sporano as my second instrument, and one reason - it takes up the equivalent of 6 bottles of wine, as oposed to 24 for my tenor. And when you go to France in your car that is vital!
