HI

My teacher does not currently own an alto and I have not really heard much music.

This may sound strange from someone learning but I started with the sax by default as a smallish instrument which meant I didn't have to cut my nails and which appealed.

I now love learning and am keen to hear some stuff which is not too fancy or complicated to get a better idea of what I am aiming at.

My "ear" is not great so trying to untangle lots of different instruments of fancy fingering will probably be hard.

Can anyone suggest something. I can see there is an ad for a cd on this site - is this the sort of thing I should be listerning to for simplicity

go and find yourself a cheap compilation album called "great jazz saxes" or something - there are many similar things available cheaply. most of them will have a range of things on you can work out what it is you like.

or listen to theJazz (on the website if you dont have DAB) or any other online radio thing you can find.

different peoples idea of a great sound is so variable i wouldnt want to impose my ideals on you

My favourite alto players are

Earl Bostic
Hank Crawford
Johnny Hodges
Charlie Parker
Ornette Coleman
Eric Dolphy

However the last 3 are certainly far from complicated. What you should listen to for inspiration must also depend on the style of music you like. If you like country music then listen to Ace Cannon.

If you like smooth jazz and funk then David Sanborn & Candy Dulfer.

And of course I do recommend buying my CD. Some is alto, some tenor & baritone. Plenty of it isn't too complicated also. And the money goes to a good cause.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
