I have often needled my good friend Mr. PigSquealer for his devotion to the ugly-duckling stepchild of the saxophone family, the C-Melody. Which I have often thought of as the unfortunate crippled offspring of a drunken one night stand involving the beautiful alto and noble tenor.

I stand corrected.

I started on a clarinet that looked like that 69 years ago. I still remember the smell.

Having seen several of the instruments that Scott Robinson plays (many of them on his appearance at Emmet Cohen’s apartment), I have wondered what his home smells like. Certainly there is some key oil fragrance, but I hope that musty mix of oil and mold and decades-old general funk is NOT there.

I have a great deal of admiration for him. He plays the real sh*t on every horn I’ve heard him on.

Wednesday night and I’m just seeing this thread.
No apologies needed, but thank you.
Yeah, Scott Robinson is the real deal on C Melody and Trad Jazz. How about that metal clarinet too ! Dunno what year, maker & model that is. Scott’s C Melody is a mid 1920’s Conn. He’s played that thing forever. With the metal MPC too, micro tuner all in. Don’t think I’ve ever seen him play a polished horn, but none have looked dirty or neglected.

It’s a Penzel Mueller. Scott Robinson talks about it in the entire show video, linked below, at the end of the Don’t Get Around Much Anymore selection.

I love YouTube, somehow this guy Rossano Sportiello ened up in my feed with the Bill Bailey video. I was so blown away that I watched a couple more, and subscribed. @PigSquealer you should check this channel out, I know you are a fan of trad jazz and early swing. These cats play their hineys off! Sportiello has been running livestreams from his flat for 6 years; this show is the 150th livestream.

Another great YouTube channel worth subscribing to. Thanks !
I would have never guessed Scott’s clarinet as an Penzel & Mueller. I didn’t know that they made any in metal. I’ve only done basic studies on the maker. Largely on trying to learn about the ‘40s-‘50s base I was gifted. One of not many.
P & M were definitely top shelf instruments. Scott brings out some fine playing talent on both of these two vintage instruments.
Thanks for posting what can be with some patience and practice 😊.

This thread is making me uncomfortable. A C melody love fest thread, really?

What's next? An AI appreciation thread?
No, not a C-melody love fest.

I actually sold mine because I just simply don't ever saw me needing to use it in an ongoing context that the alto or tenor couldn't fulfill.

That said, they can sound really good. The tenor and alto do ultimately sound better in my opinion, in all registers. But I personally very much liked my L&H (Buescher) C-Melody. Really awesome horn and I was sad to see it go.

Ultimately, I think there is just too much hate for C-Melody saxes. In good working order, a good mouthpiece/reed combo, they are great like any other sax.

BTW, my joke earlier wasn't meant to single anyone out, was merely meant as a joke all around. I actually was very much against even trying a C-Mel originally, until I got one, overhauled it and did really end up liking it.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
