Shostakovich Jazz Suite No. 2 Waltz

I very much like the above (the Waltz from Shostakovich's Jazz Suite No. 2). For those that don't know it, it was apparently used in the film 'Eyes Wide Shut' (never seen it myself) and creeps into the background in the current Raymond Blanc Restaurant series on BBC 2. Anyway, I'd love to try playing it - does anyone know of an arrangement for solo sax (preferably tenor, but I'd do alto as well). I know the proper orchestral arrangement includes a tenor part that carries quite a bit of the tune, but I'd ideally like an arrangement that could be played solo. I would willingly pay real money for this!

Hi Bob,

the concert band I play with has a nice arrangement of this piece where the alto has the melody followed by the tenor and the Bari!

next time I get the librarian to one side I will see if I can get it for you.
(sax parts that is)

Bob I've got the 1st alto part from our concert band. If I have the right piece (not seen any of the progs/films you mention) the Alto solo's right from the start - beautiful piece.

Many, many thanks - I now have the piece and it is such a joy to (try and) play. I guess I am still probably a sub-grade-2 player (that's about the level of tutorial book I'm on) but it is so good to be able to manage even the first page or so of this (Waltz no. 2 gets a bit high for me by bar 95 - high D OK, but those F's above that just squeeeeeeel). All that opportunity for dynamics and emotion. This is why I love the sax so much!

Good luck with those high F's, Bob. I don't know the piece (well, I might put a name to a face, so to speak, if I heard it), but depending on the notes around the high F, have you tried using your front F key?

That's really nice. I listen to some classical music - mostly piano but don't know anything about playing classical music on the sax. I bet that's beautiful to play. Is is possible to get classical music for alto in the same way as you can buy popular songbooks?

Couple of recordings - Audrey Cupples - Sunshine and tears album is a very listenable mixed classical album for Alto sax and piano. and Branford Marsalis made a classical album with the Orpheus Chamber orchestra called "Creation"

There's lots've classical dots about especially for alto and piano, my recommendation - look for arrangements by James Rae.

I have an arrangement for 'Apr?s un R?ve' from Gabriel Faur? for alto and piano which I've written out in Finale Notepad, alternatively as a printable .pdf file and a playalong as mp3. If you mail me I'd be glad to send you a copy, and anyone else who's also interested. Please specify which files - the notepad file is .mus - the mp3 has 1.7 mb and is alto and piano, I could make a separate piano only should anyone be interested. This piece is a beautiful melody and is not too difficult to play, I use it often to work on my tone.

I'd like to get the music for the bit of Pictures at an Exhibition which Robert Winston learnt and was shown on the television programme fairly recently.

It sounds pleasant, and not too difficult.

While on the subject of classical music on TV, can anyone have a guess at the bit of solo piano which is often used as backing for 'dreamy/contemplative' scenes?
I love it and it bugs me I can't identify it!
It's very slow, single notes, and sounds *a bit* like, but isn't, Satie's Gymnopodie No 1....any ideas?

Roger, as long as the Pictures at an Exhibition piece isn't the horrible version by Emerson Lake and Palmer....

I know of the dreamy/contemplative piano piece you mean, it became so de rigeur a couple of years back as to become a cliche. My vote for the dreamy/contemplative piece goes to Arvo Part's 'Spiegel Im Spiegel' (translation please), which drifts along for a good 10 or so minutes....

No, Bob, I don't think it's that, which sounds like a piano/cello(?) duet...the one I'm thinking of is solo piano.

I think it means, literally, "Mirror in Mirror"... so maybe "Reflections"?
