Saxophonic Ladies

Anyone heard Louise Elliott, terrific Australian born tenor player resident in London? She plays with a number of outfits, including her own band 'Lovehearts' but I know her best from the eclectic Grand Union Orchestra which also sometimes includes the wonderful alto player Tony Kofi.

Why do almost all lady sax players play the tenor?

Never having done a headcount, nor seen any statistics, my own impression tends towards more alto lady sax players, or is this a macho misconception? *g* When I think about the saxophone ladies I'm aware of I can't detect any weighted trend one way or the other. - gruss - spike

I think you're right Spike, 'love hearts' are those horrible scented sweeties with cute sayings written on them aren't they?

Maybe my impression of them all being tenor players is because the few who were around when I started listening to jazz mostly played tenor (ie Barbara Thompson, Kathy Stobart) and then of course there's Tony Curtis in 'Some Like it Hot'!

Candy Dulfer played on the Musicology tour with Prince, formerly known as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince. She was featured on his Musicology Album as well.

Another iconic saxophone player was on the very same tour with Prince, though more masculine and not quite as attractive as Candy:

Just checked out the website Spike. Not heard of her before, but yes very impressive.

Also - I see she is playing a P.Mauriat tenor. Very nice. I reckon we are going to see more and more pros giving these a go.

Which one's the Mauriat? satin gold one? mouthpiece issa Guardala, looks like an old hand made. Haven't tried those Mauriats yet, only heard good reviews.

Check out the Elephunk band for two more Saxophonic Ladies - Laura Dryer on alto, haven't heard much of her - but Lauren Sevian on Baritone can also be seen and heard with Charlie Mingus.

Yes Lauren plays a mean bari, fantastic tone over the whole range, she also features on one of the Elephunk album tracks.

Matana Roberts is a complete new name for me, very fluent player, her essay on women in music and jazz and free jazz I found very interesting, need to read it again at leisure.
