Repair Advice

I've just noticed one of the 3 fixings (soldered) on the rear of bottom pad protection has come away so my question is is it better to wait to see how it goes or get it repaired now.

If I leave it I guess its likely to affect the other 2 welds and then I guess its a more expensive repair, any ideas anyone?

Or I can take it to my local repairer and they will do it while waiting for a minimum charge of ?20 which I guess will cover 1 weld or possibly it will cost me the same for 3 welds?

Any advice what to do?

(just remember your motto no question too stupid...lol)

Hey Frank

The problem with leaving any repair job unchecked is two-fold. Firstly, you run the risk of more damge which might be worse in the long run. And secondly, it's a distraction from your playing which can sometimes lead to "over-compensation" which develops into bad habits.

Are you referring to the key guard? - I'd suggest you get it done now. If you catch it on something and it rips off, it might get bent out of shape. A good repair place should be able to do it - as it is - without any fuss.

Take good care of your horn and it will take care of you. I can't recommend servicing enough. (you wouldn't drive a car with a wobbly wheel) 😉

I know absolutely nuffink about repairs, but wont applying a resin cause more problems especially when it does go to the repairer, this is just a thought from the uninitiated?

get it fixed ...if its a clean break, it will only take a short time to fix..

It will but what happens to the laquer/ finish and the pads in the area may take a beating from the torch, us epoxy resin until you are ready for a complete service.

It depends on what typr of lacquer it is -

if its a fairly newer instrument or an older yamaha then theres every chance the lacquer wont be affected.

if you epoxy the guard foot on then it will cost more in the long run - as the repairer will have to remove the epoxy - by heating it and then thoroughly clean the area before soldering the foot.

if your'e anywhere near Croydon- pop the sax into John Myalls and I'll solder it back on for you and pop a leak light down the sax to check and adjust leaks - my rates are V reasonable - you'll more than likely get change from ?25 - I'm only there on Thursdays.

As Griff's London Diary Secretary, unpaid and unwanted, I have reason to believe for this week only, Griff will be on parade in Croydon on Friday 28th.
He will then return to normal Thursday duties.
Might save Frank an unnecessary trip and keep his carbon footprint down.
