Once in a while folks lose their mobile phones- I've done it, in all probability you've done it, and it's really annoying when you do.
Up until recently the hassle factor could be minimized by going into a mobile phone shop once in a while and saying- "Can you print out my address book from my SIM card". Ten minutes later you'd got a few sheets of A4 as an insurance policy against future mishaps.
I've just tried to do this and every shop I've gone into looked at me as if I'd got two heads (which, incidentally, I don't)... "nah, ya can't print form a SIM card"... "Eh?" " you can't do that any more" etc....
For a start- how annoying is the fact that this standard service appears to have been removed!? Secondly- has anyone got any clever ideas or gadgets for how to take this, fairly basic, precausion?

When I got a phone, it came with a cd which allows me to make a backup or offline phonebook which saved my butt on a number of occasions. There should be some tools that come on the CD.

(However, if there isn't one that came with your phone.......I am not sure)

Mine is the same - I have a facility to synchronise my address book with my PC address book. I have a motorola phone. Perhaps if you look on the website for your make of phone you can download some software?

i don't have a mobile phone. i don't think i ever will..so i wont ever have a rant like yours..hope you get it sorted..

I only have one complaint about my mobile, which is supplied by 'da man' as a tool of the trade, and is included as part of my PDA, which is what I'm typing this post on; that complaint is that the phoe is set up in such a way that you can never turn it off :cry:

edit: I thought of inserting the stray 'n' into phoe, but realised it was a deliberate subconscious typo, which sums up quite accurately my relationship with mobiles. If work didn't supply it I probably wouldn't bother.

I mainly use mine abroad but take it with me when I'm on my bike (Ducati not pushbike) in case it breaks down. I don't know my own phone number. I once put 'home' 'the AA' and 'work' into the phone with the manual. If this constitutes my address book I'm not that worried that I don't know how to back it up. I don't know how to send a text message. Lest all of this suggests that I'm incapabable of using the damn thing as opposed to just disliking it I'm not a technophobe - I've programmed computers with various assmeblers and in FORTRAN, C and C++ as part of work for the last 20 years...

I didnt know anything about this printing your phone book.

My mobile got nicked a while ago. When I got a new one I had to just go round all my contacts and get their numbers from them... twas very annoying! 😡

I can back mine up onto an SD card so all is not lost if the pda breaks down. It's another matter if it gets nicked though, the card lives in the pda.

Is this thread purely for ranting about mobile phones? If not, can I rant about something else? I can cite certain musicians who, for reasons that I could and would go into, at great length, and who are very often very popular or well-respected who at best just leave me cold and at worst plain get my goat.

Ok, I may, but on reflection it's probably of limited value. I was going to invite people to propose reasons why they couldn't get on with certain musicians and for others to put the case for, in an attempt to open up a dialogue rather than a Kenny G-style feud and flame-fest.

Maybe we could broaden this thread to include other inanimate technical objects. Does anyone remember the NME feature in the 90's, "Rage Against A Machine", when RATM were popular? Each week, a celebrity from the world of music rages against a machine - this week, Suede's Brett Anderson rages against a fax machine. Etc.
