Yeah tha guy Matt makes it look easy.
Anyone remember your first experience cooking bacon crispy while still in the frying pan !

The Kohlert 57 tenor that's been in The Barn since post #304 came home yesterday. :clapping: :sax: I spend a couple of enjoyable hours with it yesterday and a couple more today getting to know it again.

Turns out our Warrior Poet Pig is also a bit of a wizard.

I gave him a chunk of lead and he made some gold.

It plays perfectly, of course...well, you know, as well as its owner can manage. I mean, everything is tight and smooth. The neck fit is nothing short of spectacular. It's like a new horn! Another fabulous horn that I don't deserve, but I'm really enjoying your work, Sir Pig. Thank you!!:thanks3:

Now, I have one last thing to say about that...

Thank you for your kind words. Previous techs have been kind to this beautiful old Kolhert for 68 years. Keep it clean and oiled and will be around another hundred.

Yes, you do deserve this one. Hobby player or pro player. Both are deserving of a quality instrument that works correctly.
“If a machine is not working correctly it’s unfair to the operator”.

Deserving enough for small stuff. Level top of this foot.

Here she is straight outta The Barn, the horn that Squealer (re)built. Just a couple minutes of sound byte from my kind of Brecker tune...slow and easy.

Normally I'm not a big fan of the V16 mouthpieces, but the T7L sounds pretty good to me on the new 57.

Thanks again. She's a real pleasure to play.

You’re awesome 🙌. You’ve only had it back like two days and you’re recording 🤩 Have you been practicing on another horn while this was out ?
I’m curious why you didn’t use the GS mouthpiece. It worked great for me. Still you sound great on the V-16. Reed type ?

Is this your channel ?

Sure, I have a Comm III and a Yani T880 that usually get the most play time, but I've been playing the 57 exclusively since it arrived.

The GS Reso is a very similar piece. It sounds good too but those low subtones at the end were a little easier on the V16. The reed is a Hartmann Fiberreed Carbon Onyx MS.

Well you have three fabulous options now. When are you selling the Yani🤣
Lookie what is just bought at NAMM on Friday. I almost grabbed an Onyx MS too.

I haven't tried the RPL cut. I'm very happy with the regular Carbon and Onyx.

I played the same Carbon reed for just over a year before it pooped out. The sound change was the only clue. It still played and responded just fine, but the sound went kinda dead.

EDIT: Oh, be super careful with the tip on those Carbons. That's their Achilles' heel. They sound and feel great, but that tip is pretty delicate. The Onyx is more duable.

That recording is the first any of my customers have ever sent or posted. I can’t thank you enough for this ! Very valuable information feedback. I did the tuning with a Meyer 6 and the lig it came with. 2.5 Rico blue box. Basic generic stuff. Worked to a good state of tune. Then used your GS mouthpiece with same lig & reed. It played even better.

Here’s a comparison between the two of us.
My initial tuning session on Meyer. (Note; I made adjustments afterwards)
The TE tuner set at medium (-/+ 3¢) scales, long tones and bend the notes to see give range of note.
Green is in range, orange is outside of 3¢. Red, warning Will Robinson.

From your recording and same settings (-/+3¢). V-16, Oynx Reed.

This is your recording with the tuner set at “wide” -/+ 5¢. 🤩🤩🤩

Real world live playing is closer to -/+ 15¢. The tuner lacks a fat pig setting. At -/+ 15¢ I’d bet it would show 100% in tune🤣

So...that's pretty good, right?

I've never seen this kind of analysis before. Probably good that l don't use it. I'd drive myself bonkers trying to get all happy faces. When I listen back to that recording my ear tells me it's not perfect, but then neither is Brecker's.

I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've ever posted a recording. I record quite a lot but only for self-evaluation. So that was just a regular practice session but it sounded decent to me and I thought it'd be cool to hear your handiwork.

Yeah ya done passed the real players exam 🎟️🏆
In general it’s not a good idea to play looking at a tuner. I use one to check my work only.
Recording to listen later can be very helpful. A good way to chart progress.
I was listening to one of my recordings while showering once. Wife thought I’d lost my marbles and was playing in the shower 🤪

Loved the recording thanks for posting, you should consider some of our monthly recording threads 😁

Happy Monday.
Lacquer over patina looks cool on this nice old Kolhert 57. This tenor plays really well too. I actually like this better than a King Super 20 I did last year. Would be interesting to hear them side by side.
